What I find funny is that it was painted to look like the most common B/O wrap. Plain white.

For the sake of mankind, please remove the paint from the metal parts, too. Probably a one or two day soak in paint remover or lacquer thinner will do the heavy work followed by another one or two days soak in a solution of one cup of Dawn dish washing liquid per each gallon of water. The drum hoops should fit in a medium size plastic tub, The white paint on the Acro snare drum might be OK to your personal taste if you don't want to mess with it.

Hi there guys - thanks for all the input. The funny thing is that I actually know the guy who painted these drums - he told me once about this ludwig set that he once owned and painted but I left it there - about a year later I again asked him about it and he said that he will check with the guy that he sold it to and see whether he still had the drums. It turned out that he did and never played them anymore - So I offered him the equivalent of around USD 60 for the kit which he accepted - which included a nice working condition Speed King pedal - anyway, long story short, I scored these drums at a good price and now need to spend some time on them.

Thanks for the valued input - I will start off with some paint stripper over the weekend and a plastic paint scraper and see how it goes. With the lugs, hoops and tension rods, I will follow the advice given by letting them lie in some stripper and thereafter dishwashing liquid and see how that goes too. I will report back.

I tried lacquer based thinners this morning and it works like a charm in removing the spray paint. It does not seem to do any damage to the the wrap either!

A couple of quick wipes with some lacquer thinners uncovers a beautifully preserved white marine pearl wrap - I think these drums are going to look amazing once cleaned up and polished with some Novus. Very excited about the project. The lugs, currently painted black appear smooth as well so I suspect minimal, if any, pitting. And the inlays on both hoops are perfectly intact, currently sprayed black. I suspect that they will also look brand new once cleaned up. I will keep you guys posted!

That's a lot of work ahead of you. I would have walked away from that set, personally. Too much of a project. No thanks.

LoLoLoLo Hey I reckoned that at USD 60 for a (albeit painted) Supra snare, 4 very decent Super Classic MPM shells (12", 13", 16" and 22") with re-rings and a Speed King pedal in working condition, I could hardly go wrong. Even if it meant rewrapping - which now seems unlikely Cool1

I could definitely be bothered to take on that project for just 60 bucks! Nice score.

That paint kind of acted like cosmoline by protecting the finish and hardware.

It took me about an hour to get the 12” shell to look like this - not perfect yet but with some Novus, it will shine - I’m sure.
