From OddBall

This is my kit, the only one I got, I`ve had others in that room but they were not mine. My friends were right, Buy SONOR and all you`ll ever change is heads.

May I ask how old are you ?

Speed metal? Okay, enough said. Yah, you're going to dent Emperors along with just about any other head designed for moderate to heavy playing. To withstand the brutality of speed metal, you may want to think about investing in Kevlar heads. They're indestructible. I use the term "invest" because they may be the last heads you'll ever have to buy. No, they won't stop a bullet, but pretty close. My ears are ringing just thinking about the volume levels you must play at. Full Marshall stacks dialed up to "11" right?Mike

i don`t know what a kevlar head is, I know it`s used in body armor. I hope they are not expensive. The ax players can`t drown me, the bass player can at will.

The loudness gradually went from noise to sound. By 20yrs.old, I had it under control. I see some fantastic speed metal guys and one girl, and then there`s the one`s that use the cymbals way too much. Drives me nuts. When I learned double bass, individual pedals is where you eventually end up. The one thing about BD speed, is if you go hard you go slow. I used to step the pedal, now I use the pad of my foot, and toes and rest on the heel plate. If you want to be at your fastest, the more lightly you can do it, the faster you can go. Most speed metal guys I know, mic only the BD`s unless you at an area or something.

Drummers hook up well with the Bass players like vocals hook up with a good vocalist and the lead guitar hooks up with the chick in the second row. 90% of my time playing is without vocals. They`re hard to get, once you find one. Garage parties are the bomb !

From vibes

I have had it. What in hell ls wrong with drummers who destroy their and my drum heads. I provide a nice set for drummers to use in my recording studio, but no more. I had a guy come in yesterday, fairly well known regional drummer, to lay down a few grooves for a client. He played well but during the session I noticed big dents in my up, and floor tom. Plus they play so hard which is not called for. From now on they bring in their own sets. I'm done. I asked him if he beat up and dented his heads like that, and he said yes. They use those sticks that are like the butt end of regular sticks. I am ****ed. I rarely dent a head. Very very rarely. what is wrong with these guys ? I was able to take a lighter and fix my heads fairly well so as not have to replace them. Maybe I should require a damage deposit from the client before I let someone use my drums.

Yes.. you have the solution... Damage deposit up front should do the trick.. makes business sense to me..

Cheers

John

Final words and you can quote me

“Never leave your vintage heads or pies for that matter for use other than yourself or a trusted one”

There is, in fact, a limit to the loudness of a drum correlated to the strength of the attack. That point is reached when the head is dented. You've just removed 1/8th of an inch of amplitude from the previous hit that didn't dent the head. Another step in amplitude will destroy the head...making it silent. Therefore, there is a point of diminishing returns!

You`re absolutely right. There`s a stick threshold as well depending on how you chop. None is accidental for the most part.

I live with it. If you run a studio, you plan for it.

Well I would say it's more simple than it sounds. You don't have to have crazy good technique, you just have to aim for the center of the drum and let the sticks rebound, I play really heavy stuff and I've never dented a head, except for the bass drum and that's because I bury the beater.
