Vintage Slingerland Snare Drum help needed to restore

Loading...

From seantdrums

Thx for the info mark. The interior would it have been laquered or left bare. Also a shell like this would you say it is correct for 1975/76. I dont know much about 3ply and 5 ply slingerland shells. Im new to slingerland just been wrapped up in lots of english drums recently. Thx sean

The interior of 3-ply shells were not lacquered like the 5-ply shells. However, I don't what Slingerland was doing in the mid-70's. The 1976 catalog still says it was a uni-mold shell, meaning 3-ply. The 1978 catalog specifically mentions that it was a 5-ply shell.

I agree with Mark that this is an Artist #153 model snare. It looks like it was originally copper over wood (COW) as NoBass noted. The copper wrap was actually a copper coated steel hence the rust (not uncommon). Serial puts this in the '74-'75 range. The muffler 180 degrees opposite the badge/vent, which Mark mentioned, occurred in the mid 70's according to DrCJW so that makes sense. Mark also correctly identified the shell as three ply. This was the default shell through '78 with the 5-ply being optional (per DrCJW's shell article). Expect mahogany under the copper wrap. If so a good candidate for a re-wrap. Hoops at this time were COS. Original wires were 20-strand. Nice snare and keep us posted on your restoration.

If the mahogany ply is in good cond all round what do you think about a laquer finish.

Certainly, why not? Just a word of caution: Some claim that copper on steel wrap can be very difficult to remove cleanly. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice point well taken. If it has been glued down all round i normally heat up with the hairdrier and funny enough it does quite a good job. I will definitely take time taking the metal wrap off.

I had a 10" COW Slingerland concert tom some years back. The metal wrap was a BEAR to remove!! The best way I found is to gently pull up the wrap at the seam and then use a heat gun to soften the glue a little at a time while pulling up on the wrap. The biggest problem was that the metal wrap gets really hot! Just wear gloves and you should be good.

This would be a good candidate for some "Mirror Chrome Wrap"... from Jammin' Sam...

Cheers

Funny enough i have some mirror wrap on a MIJ floor tom which i had the complete kit given to me. No badges. It is also the metal type wrap mirror finish. The rest of kit is a mess. As long as it comes off easily.

All advice was taken. I got the copper wrap off quite easy with one small pull on the mahogany finish. Ive decided to do it in White marine pearl delmar wrap. Pics will be coming soon as im in the middle of a few restorations. The interior was very much dried out so i put a couple coats tung oil then lots of bees wax and it looks stunning. All the chrome work came up great apart from the batter hoop which has gone too far. I replaced some tension rods and washers for slingerland rods. The batter hoop im gonna re chrome. The chrome was eaten off and rust had got in quite bad. Ive sanded it down and with a polish the hoop actually looks quite good.
