Vintage Slingerland Snare Drum help needed to restore

Loading...

Hi Guys ive just rescued this slingerland snare drum basically from going into scrap as a tear down. I paid a little too much but i love something about this drum. I can tell it has some sort of metal wrap under neath some sort of plastic covering. I need info as to model year shell type. Its the first slingerland ive had to restore and want some ideas and input please. It will be restored to some sort of former glory. I couldnt watch this drum go to the breakers. I must be going soft. Well i normally do premier hayman john grey etc etc. Ill keep everyone posted as to the resto progress once i get the drum.......sean

seantdrums!

You've rescued a late 70's Artist model snare drum, catalog #153. What's the serial number? That will help narrow down the year. Still, late 70's is probably accurate, due to the fact that the muffler is now opposite the air vent/logo. The shell is 3-ply maple/poplar/mahogany with solid maple re-rings. The shell may have been a left-over, as Slingerland was using 5-ply shells during this time period. Also, the profile of the hoops also points to later 70's. Again, post a picture of the badge, or just let us know the serial number.

I see you've already posted more pictures. I can't quite make out the first digit of the serial number.

70s Cow with zoomatic throw off IMO

Except for the fact that it uses the Leedy butt, which tells me it is an Artist snare drum and still in the '79 catalog.

Thanks for the info. The pics you see are the ones from the ad. Once i get the drum ill get the number to you. Just cropped original pic its the best i can do for now. The wrap underneath looks like its rusting would it be a copper wrap. The hoops with the rust must be COS. Some rods need changing as they are odd ones. The snare in the late 70's catalogue is a maple finish. Wondering if this is the way to go with this as the original wrap looks like its gone beyond repair.

The SN appears to be 165556. If so, that would indicate around 1975-76, according to the guide posted here... http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_2_serial_numbers_page3.html

Thx for the info mark. The interior would it have been laquered or left bare. Also a shell like this would you say it is correct for 1975/76. I dont know much about 3ply and 5 ply slingerland shells. Im new to slingerland just been wrapped up in lots of english drums recently. Thx sean
