Slingerland Avante-worth restoring??????

Loading...

Hi All,

My habit expanded yesterday...I couldn't help myself and purchased another Slingy set. This one is what I "believe" to be an Avante set, the second tom (single) mount is not present, but the holes and outline is. They are 8x12/9x13/16x16/14x22, no snare, no 10x14 3rd tom. Bought the hole shootin' match for $200.00. They need cleaning, the 12, 13 and 16 have no extra holes. The bass drum, however, is another story, see pics. Some "tool" drilled large 1.1875" dia holes (2) in the drum, and covered up the badge. All S/N are close, (2) are 69xxx, and (2) are 70xxx, black and silver Niles badges. Maybe I should send this to the other forum for restoring??..but a few questions: 1. Is it worth trying (or possible) to fill these large dia holes? Or should I put the Pearl tom holder back on? Problem is I wouldn't be able to put an original 2nd Slingy mount on, no room. Is there any professional place I could go to have this done? I've filled small holes in drums, but these are LARGE. 2. Look at the color of this wrap, it's original as far as I can tell. Looks more maroon to me next to my red sparkle Slingerland set. Is this what they call Sparkling Maroon Pearl? Is it rare? 3. What year do you suppose these are from? 4. Is this like putting perfume on a pig??? Could it get costly? If this is the "sparkling maroon pearl", it may be close to impossible to find that color again (for repair)? Let alone the 14" matching color tom? Should I just take my $200.00 loss? The other drums are in good shape, just need cleaning, no cracks, just the normal wear. Inside is the natural wood finish (no "chocolate milk" coat), 3 ply, stamped "P" with re-rings. A few bulges in some of the wood, but nothing major/nothing to hurt sound. I know this is a lot, but if any Slingy expert has any answers, I sure would appreciate it...Thanks!!

Alloy, I am not a guru, but I am a Slingy (and bargain) lover, and that was a great score. Due to the big holes in the bass drum, it’ll never be a collector’s quality set. Patch ‘em the best you can, or put flowers in ‘em and enjoy the heck out of ‘em!

As far as the color goes, it appears to me to be sparkling red pearl that has aged to a fine wine color. I think the maroon was a lot darker. But since the color is darker under the hardware, I dunno...

In your 3rd pic it appears that you've got 3 floor toms. Are my eyes deceiving me?

I think hes just showing the difference in the shade of red, compared to his other (brighter red) slingerland set

$200 was a good deal. It's red sparkle you have, and I would think this set is a good candidate for a recover by a trained drum tech/repair person. He could patch the holes and make the set look good. Wrap finishes can vary in shade from batch to batch sometimes.

Thanks Bob. The "maroon" drums are definitely darker and more burgundy or maroon than the red sparkle i have (and have seen). Even under the lugs the color is darker than the exposed wrap. It's hard to imagine the color has faded from a standard red sparkle either. But it doesn't matter the color , really. The thing is, I was only going to re-wrap the bass drum. For both cost reasons and the purity reasons. Ill never get exact by doing this, but by knowing the exact factory Slingerland color, I figured i might have a good starting point...

Thanks everyone for all your input. It's very kind and helpful!

Have a blessed day..

I took a pic of the 12" tom that I have. Overlapped it to the Dr. Wenk Sparkling Maroon Pearl shot, then took a screen shot of it. It's pretty close, almost dead on. I'm convinced this is the Sparkling Maroon Pearl. Now if someone has an idea on the approx. year?? Thanks again all...

Hi AlloyBoy!

The serial numbers and clear interior date your drums to late 1971 or 1972. Hope that helps!
