Ludwig Rocker II's?

I'm interested to see what sizes they are seeing how there are 4 mounted toms and a floor tom. I'm assuming a 22" BD and a 16" FT but hard to tell from the pics. Wes

Possibly a Rocker "Phaser Power" set with upgraded spurs.

They look like Rockers (or Phasers) and not Rockers II. Great drums! They are USA for sure (should have "USA on the black and white badges). Great score! The bass drum should be 22" by 14". The only things throwing me off a little is that the shells looks like they have the lud-coat interiors. Early Rockers were clear. Other things that are different are the bass drum spurs and the inlays on the kick drum hoops. Lastly, I can't tell if the lugs are the full size classic lugs...if so, they most likely aren't Rockers...they had the small classic lugs. Great kit, no matter what series it is!

I bought a Rocker/Phaser kit...it was just solid red, so I recovered it to give it a more vintage look :)

So I picked up the set. Needs some work as expected but should be a fun project. Haven't taken it home yet to really look it over but here are the basics.

The sizes are 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 22.

Classic lugs.

The wrap has plenty of scuffs and scratches but none lifting.

The floor tom is missing the bottom rim of course.

There are a few broken or missing bolts for attaching the toms to the mounts.

The tom mount that slides on the bas drum is missing.

All of the badges are there. Rounded B/W USA with serial numbers. One number is 6070680. Not sure if that can be used to date the drums.

Need new heads all around except for bass drum batter.

Came with a Yamaha pedal, Tama boom stand, cheaper Meinl 16" crash, a cheaper drum stool. Oh, and 1 drum stick.

All drums have coated interiors and curved 1/2" bass drum spurs.

I'll get em home and maybe snap a few more shots.

I paid 100 bucks. What the guy had in to them. I didn't bother trying to dicker. The guy bought them for his kids and they quickly ran out of interest.

The funny thing, is I'll end up paying about the same amount for the 1/2" curved spurs, 9 large classic lugs, and gaskets I needed for my Vistalite kit (that this kit already has)!

Congratulations on the new Ludwigs, Wes! Are you planning to rewrap them, or do you like the black wrap that’s on them? If you dig the black, some Novus plastics polish should take care of most of the wrap scratches. This stuff works miracles! There’s even a video of a guy rubbing a CD with sandpaper, and then restoring it back to new with the Novus. Hopefully, you’re drums haven’t been rubbed with sandpaper! ;)

Thanks Old Reliable!

I do not mind black wrap as it will always look classic. I do have some Novus 1 and 2 I bought to use on a snare and the Vistalites but haven't gotten around to it yet. So good idea as I could try it on an inconspicuous area, say the bottom of the bass drum, and not really need to worry about damaging the wrap.

I have actually been wanting to try a rewrap job and these could be a good candidate as it is not an expensive vintage kit (at this time anyway) but the cost of a rewrap may not be worth it for these drums.

Maybe removing the wrap and staining the shells would be cost effective for this kit if the wrap doesn't buff out.

I've rewrapped two Rocker kits so, here's some input:

First, see what the stripped shells look like before you decide. My first kit I was considering a stain, but when I removed the wrap - the exteriors were not of that quality. And if you haven't done it before it's probably way more work than you think. But if that's what you want, go for it - I love the look.

Check some earlier threads on this site for sparkle fabric, which can be pretty dang cheap. I did this red sparkle for about $70.00 but you can get it cheaper.

I just completed my latest with wrap from Walopus, and it was not a lot more, just as easy and a much better product.

I've gigged both kits and they're solid (and cheap!)

Thanks for the advice on the staining and wrap!

Actually upon a closer look, a lot of the scuffs I saw are actually tape residue. Someone must have put a bunch of tape of some sort all over the drums and then someone else pulled it off leaving the residue behind. So I think cleaning that off and trying the Novus 1 and 2 on the wrap will have the drums looking much better. The floor tom does have a weird spot in the wrap were it has slightly lifted. Kind of like bubbled. Only noticeable if the light is reflecting off of it just right. It isn't on a seam so I don't think there is anything I can do there.

You did really well . Can't beat $100 for those drums. I would not rewrap. I bet they will look great after the Novus. I never thought I would like black drums until I found a black Rogers set and cleaned it up. Stunning ! With that Ludcoat inside I think they are Rocker 2. Four ply maple ,poplar. 6 ply bass drum. Nice drums, should sound great. I use coated ambassadors reso and batter side. Those four ply toms will sound great with that combination if you like a lot of tone. Can't wait to see pics as you clean and restore them Great project. I actually got a four ply wood rocker 2 snare shell off eBay a while back and robbed the hardware from one of my acrolite', and had a spare older type snare throw. Looks like a jazz fest. . It sounds great. It was a silver sparkle wrap and matched my set so have been playing it lately on some gigs. Was at Lou's Blues in Melbourne FL. Last week and they have a dedicated system and sound guy. Sounded great through their system.

Thanks. Figured 100 bucks was a good price. By the time I find the tom stand for the bass drum, a 16" rim and tension rods for the floor tom, misc. I bolts and wing nuts, and batter and resonant heads for 6 drums it will add up a bit but still worth it.

I have a black Rogers Big R kit in great shape and like how they look so I will try cleaning these bad boys up first.

I like the "Jazz Fest"!

The lugs are the same sizes as on my Vistalite kit. Just under 2" on the toms and about 2 1/2" on the bass drum. The only difference is the Rocker kit has the smaller lugs on the floor tom also where the Vistalite has the larger lugs on the floor tom. Although the Vistalite floor tom is an 18".
