Star made drums with plastic hoops???

Loading...

Hello to my fellow MIJ enthusiasts

I found a little six lug U.S. Mercury (oval badge) bass drum in fantasia pearl

The drum has both hoops (I thought they were wood)

and the fantasia inlay is intact on both

They are made of plastic

so I was wondering if anyone else has any Star made drums with plastic not wood or most common chrome plated steel hoops ?

I have some non-Star Hoshino kits with plastic hoops but this is a first for me finding a Star made drum with them

Nope, I've never seen Star hoops made of plastic. Perhaps Ralf will chime in.

Hello salty

Thanks for the response

can remember a few years back I found this 3 pc Star kit (pictured)

(rectangular badge)in orange sparkle

these drums were super clean and original

That is, once I removed 40 years of dust from them

What is notable about those was the 22" bass drum

had black painted steel hoops

It was the first time I found a Star kit with anything

other than real wood or chrome plated steel hoops

No one had seen this before so it was suggested then that the hoops were replacements

I doubted this at the time as the inlays were a perfect match to this somewhat odd shade of orange sparkle and the circumstances to finding the kit and all it's supplied and original accessories right down to a pair of Star labeled drum sticks

all that along with the length of time this kit was stored away just did not add up to replaced hoops

since then, I have found two other Star made kits

both were 22" bass drums with black oval badges one was this Lyra kit (pictured)

and the other a beat up blue sparkle kit with Werco badges

and both drums had black painted steel hoops with factory original inlays intact.

so hopefully this is a similar situation

This U.S. Mercury bass is just a six lug so it was more likely than not a lower end build so maybe this is why the plastic ?

I do have another partial fantasia kit U.S.Mercury "Pro"

That drum is eight lugs with chrome plated steel hoops typical of most Star drums

So heck yes we do need to hear from Ralf

Hello Mike thanks about the drum

btw I posted these pics a while back of this "sun set" bass drum

that I surrounded with wmp orphans

you had expressed an interest in seeing them I was not sure if you ever had the chance

and I was wondering what you thought of them

I have seen an MIJ with black plastic BD hoops. It was a very rigid hard-surfaced plastic and shiny. It reminded me of the plastic that some 60's toys were made of, like toy guns.

Thanks for the Sun Set pics. I dig the Wmp inlay tying it into the other drums. Big fan of the Sun Set wrap. I had not seen those pics that I recall. Great looking kit Kenwood!

Hello Teverson-sr

Yes I know just what you mean and yes....these are those

Hey Mike you are very welcome, and Thank You kindly

..oh heck yes the wmp hoops were key

and you know the sunset hoops look great on the wmp bass drum as well (pictured)

I got lucky with the two toms both being Pearl made and center lugged just like the bass drum

The floor tom is a 13" I did not notice that until I went to put fresh heads

The snare drum is a Fuji

In pics 3 and 4, does the badge on the floor tom say "Rejent" - Regent with a J? Never seen that before.

Cool pics though!

Sorry to go slightly off-topic, but I have a Lyra kit identical in every way to the one you pictured except the wrap (mine is blue sparkle). It only came with one hoop though, black painted steel with matching inlay (though not in the best condition). Would you happen to have an extra one of these hoops laying around?

Kenwood,

While I was researching my acrylic Star kit I noticed that both of the clear kits pictured on Ralf's site appear to have clear plastic bass hoops. Mine however, has chromed steel with an odd metal mesh ribbon as an inlay, but it was missing from one hoop and not completely in-tact on the other, so I just went with no inlay.
