I just got a drumming gig that doesn't involve drumming Last viewed: 1 hour ago

"What the....?" I hear you asking :)

Well, for the last 4 years I've been working background (formerly called 'extras') for the movies & TV & answered a casting call for an older drummer, they just called & told me I got the part! Excited

I assume they'll have a set, but won't know until later today, if they want me to bring one of mine then they'll be paying me big bucks.

I can't talk too much about it until the show airs, but I can say it's a cable TV show with a couple of big movie & TV stars (one of whom I've drooled over for years...no, I don't get to talk to them :( ).

When it airs I'll get a screenshot, assuming of course any scenes I'm in don't end up on the cutting room floor, which has happened.

That's pretty cool. Give us the details when it airs so we can check it out. Speaking role or still just background?

Just background, I'm not a SAG member & have no desire to be one.

What's funny is when I was young it was a tossup whether I'd be an actor or a musician, Mom wanted me to be an actor. But I figured out that with my looks I'd be typecast & I liked playing drums more :)

They just called, I have to bring my own set, but they're paying me :) I'll take the Breakbeats.

You want big bucks to show up and sport Breakbeats ??

If I had a slot to be on TV, it would not be behind Breakbeats.

I take the pay they offer (which is pretty good) & I'm background, which means they don't want me or any other background to stand out. They told me I could bring any set I wanted, I'm taking the Breakbeats because they're small & light. I could be there from 8 to 14 hours (& it's a 1.5 hour drive), I don't want to deal with my bigger sets after that long a day, particularly if I have to be dressed & deal with Wardrobe at the end of the day.

Like I said, I've been doing this for 4 years now, I know the ins & outs & what they're looking for.

Actually, it's a 16.

I have an idea, why don't you go work on a few sets then come back & we'll talk.

I did it in LA, CA.

They called it sidelining back then.

You had to be Union. Local 47.

Free hair cuts for 1940's settings.

Wardrobe fitting too.

Had to bring drums.

It was fun.....

Unless... it went long and you had to hire a sub for your night gig.

Met Loyd Bridges and he was very nice.

We mostly had to pretend to hit the instruments.

Get as close as you can without making sound.

Except for a couple of close ups where you actually make contact and sound.

Have fun sir.

We laughed a lot trying to be quiet.

Relax, I`m not being bad.

Nah, I am camera shy, next thing ya know I might be a Star, and Who wants that ?

No union for us background here, though they follow union rules. I have to go to wardrobe tomorrow, though they let me wear my own stuff depending on the show (they asked me to wear jeans, boots, vest, t-shirt tomorrow).

My gigs are all weekends now, so no having to hire a sub.

Funny story about being quiet: Filming the first episode of "Preacher" summer before last, they're in the bar, we're maybe 30 yards away, with 2 trailers between us & the bar. The AD comes over to us & starts *****ing about us talking too loud. Right at that moment, a semi comes by with his jake brake on, completely drowned him out Falling Do

Got to meet Bryce Dallas Howard (Ron Howard's daughter), very sweet & even prettier in real life :)
