I've been looking at this kit and envy you. Hope it pans out. I'm sure they sound fantastic!

I can tell you that they are indeed awesome sounding beautiful drums

on the kit I have the mounted drums are power depth and with no tone controls

I would much prefer standard depth toms like those

That mounted drum looks larger to me than 12" especially in the first and second pics

I would say you are offering up a fair price, but without overpaying for them

I cant really tell about the spur bracket adjustment screw

Thanks for the reply ! The tom is a 12", and the seller has been very cool

about answering all my questions and going to have a look at it.

I guess i'll find out more when i check them out next Saturday.

Superstars are the BEST drums to come out of the 80's - bar none. Now can you stumble across a set that may cost you less than what you are paying for these? Likely, but don't sweat it. Pass on the power tom kits, grab the traditional depths like yours.

I'd probably jump on 'em. Amazing drums, more so the earlier ones in standard depths like those as opposed to the 'power' depths.

I would not go so far to say "pass on the power depths" they actually sound freakin GREAT

But they are a little hard to play comfortably unless you go six feet or thereabouts

Especially with the 24" bass drum

by the time you hang them power toms with enough clearance

to avoid rashing the bass drum they do sit pretty high

I have two sets of the power depth and I have been thinking of having one set cut down

They still would not be as nice as those you are looking at

I know the "inconvenience" of power toms as well.. When i was 19, and full throttle into my metal and progressive rock and metal phase, i bought a later 80's Tama Swingstar double bass kit with the square lugs, and had two toms that were 14x14 and 15x15 (i think)..All i know is that when i had them set up on a double tom stand in between both bass drums, i had them as low as the tom post and base could go, and they literally looked like 2 smaller hanging floor toms. I bought the kit used off of a jazz drummer/instructor who was well known in Montreal. I never took lessons, so i never met him until i bought the kit..I was a cocky, arrogant self taught Neil Peart/Bonham/Portnoy "expert", until i saw another drummer my age who was schooled, play with his band..Needless to say, my cockiness dissipated into shame and embarrassment. Mind you, i did know a lot for someone who never took a lesson and learned on his own. Long story short, power toms were cool back then, but totally inconvenient for a busy gigging drummer like myself.. I always prefered standard depths anyway.. Vinnie Paul of Pantera still uses those power depths i believe, but i can't be sure..

You mean like these Rob?

These 80's zola-coated Swings also have the power depth toms but with only a 22" bass drum rather 24"

and that 2" seems to make a lot of difference comfort-wise for me

I do have the other bass drum but the hoops are not presentable and besides

I have all I can handle with just the one

Superstars are good drums. They were made with birch, and you can notice the quality just by putting your hands on them. I really dig that finish and CS dot clear heads. You can see the cherry interiors trough them. I bought a set from the late 70's/early 80's (I believe) that still has reinforcement hoops, in regular depth sizes.

If the kit is in good condition, I would say you must go for it.
