Cocktail anyone?

I scored a 8 X5 and 10X6. concert toms with double stand of off fee bay today. I think these will do nicely. Tonite I am going to go ahead and put a top head on the ft and see how it sounds with a kick pedal. I wonder what kind of muffler i shoud put in there. If i put a pillow it will lat against the batter head. maybe I should line the inside of the drum with 1" foam I have in stock here at the shop, or some dacron we use to stuff pilows. the foam or dacron will stand up right and not lay on the batter head.

Actually I thought about a hi hat stand under the tom, going thru the bottom head and a hi hat clutch on the ride cymbal but the action would be reversed somehow lol

From poppy79424

Believe me I have thought about that. The floor tom is 20" a 16" lid would fall through.

Perhaps a Remo Muff'l Ring? I use one on my 22" bass drum and love the sound. It might be a little dead on a cocktail drum given that you have gravity working against you, but if so you could always cut half the foam away.

Eye Ball...That's probably about a $200 garbage can you have there...even despite the fact that the leg mounts are unoriginal.....

For tips go to www.cocktaildrum.com. I would argue not to drill your 20" drum, you may regret it later+ plenty other options. For a pedal, many regular pedals can be taken apart and have the beater assembly put back in opposite direction. Thats what I did with a DW5000 for my uprite kit.

I didn't notice that it was a 20" floor tom... man, who bought 20" floor toms?

I too would concur with plexi69 that anytime I've drilled a "good" drum I've later regretted it.

I bought the floor tom off of ebay a few yrs back. it was listed as a rogers. It has roger swivomatic leg bracket and legs. I believe the swivo hardware is rare and worth some bucks. When I joined this forum I learned a lot. The lugs were definatly slingy. I replace them with lugs from drummaker, but still have the original slingy lugs. I wraped it to match my 68 skyblue luddys. The thing is just to dang big to set up with the luddys in the corner on my living room. I would have to bring the whole kit out about 3 feet for it to fit behind the 16" floor tom. 1st thing im gonna do is put some sort of muffler in the tom and reverse a kick pedal and see how it sounds as a bass drum. It's worth a whole lot more than 200 to me!

I got my heads on the floor tom and my pedal reversed. Im not too happy with the way it sounds yet. I have a remo weather master tom beater head for the bottom and a cheap tko head on top. I lined the inside of the drum with dacron. I had a couple of extrernal muffles I put on the top and it still has too much ring or overtones to it. I guess ill just have to spend some money on some heads. I need a bottom batter head for a kick drum sound and a top batter head for a floor tom sound.

I imagine calf heads would sound great on something like that, but unless you "find" some, 20's are usually pricey.

I'd toyed with different cocktail sets for awhile and last year found this site (there's some videos there):

http://www.gigpig.org/

which to me was an amazing idea. I want to, someday... make a "green" version with a theme that reflects Hawaii. I wanted to make it look as good as I could, and use little/no plastic. I contacted the Gigpig guys and they would sell me some parts although they said they normally don't. Here's what I was thinking about:

It would be nice for small apartments and something to yank out of the corner instead of the usual hassle.

It would be a one piece drumset. An idea was to find a cool woven basket thingy I could make into a tribal version of a canister throne.

al. I'd probably put a light in it and some sort of palm tree silhouette logo on the kick.

I have pretty much made up my mind up. I am not going to drill the floor tom. They make all sorts of clamps that attach to the rim and i will have at least one stand
