Cocktail anyone?

WOW! I went to the gig pig site. Those are crazy!!!!

From MastroSnare

I imagine calf heads would sound great on something like that, but unless you "find" some, 20's are usually pricey.I'd toyed with different cocktail sets for awhile and last year found this site (there's some videos there):http://www.gigpig.org/which to me was an amazing idea. I want to, someday... make a "green" version with a theme that reflects Hawaii. I wanted to make it look as good as I could, and use little/no plastic. I contacted the Gigpig guys and they would sell me some parts although they said they normally don't. Here's what I was thinking about:It would be nice for small apartments and something to yank out of the corner instead of the usual hassle. It would be a one piece drumset. An idea was to find a cool woven basket thingy I could make into a tribal version of a canister throne.al. I'd probably put a light in it and some sort of palm tree silhouette logo on the kick.

I already joined that forum, but they dont have much going on in there. Its pretty dead compared to this forum. I have tried a few other forums and I think this one is the best! I did read up on a few things and found some cool hardware I may need. I am adding up what i think im about to spend and have already decided that I could have just bought a ready made cocktail kit and spent less money! lol

I am certifiably insane!

For tips go to www.cocktaildrum.com. I would argue not to drill your 20" drum, you may regret it later+ plenty other options. For a pedal, many regular pedals can be taken apart and have the beater assembly put back in opposite direction. Thats what I did with a DW5000 for my uprite kit.

This Website and CocktailDrum.Com helped me get this together!

Here are a few photos of my "Rat Rod OMB Cocktail Drum". I put her together from a few drums I rescued from the trash. They were already painted flat black, very Rat Rod. OMB stands for "One Man Band". I've been performing in this blues tradition for years. Everything except for the old Ludwig Hi-Hat stand, cheap cymbals, 16 inch Bass drum hoop, clamps and leg brackets were rescued from the same trash heap. I used conduit clamps to attach the Hi-Hat stand and Gibraltar 12mm floor tom leg brackets to attach the Orange kick pedal.

I have an optional snare that I made from the 13 inch up tom that was rescued. It attaches to the same post that the Hi-Hat stand attaches and I play that (if needed) with an added kick pedal that I use with my standard OMB drum kit. That's it for now.

Enjoy,

I scored a 8 X5 and 10X6. concert toms with double stand of off fee bay today. I think these will do nicely. Tonite I am going to go ahead and put a top head on the ft and see how it sounds with a kick pedal. I wonder what kind of muffler i shoud put in there. If i put a pillow it will lat against the batter head. maybe I should line the inside of the drum with 1" foam I have in stock here at the shop, or some dacron we use to stuff pilows. the foam or dacron will stand up right and not lay on the batter head.

Hey, I'm new to this forum, but one of the other drummers said that he puts a dry cleaner bag made of very light plastic crumpled into the floor tom. I tried it and it works great. Hope this helps. I have a cocktail kit that I just put together using a Rogers Swivomatic foot pedal which I customized to use on the floor tom. It works better for me than other pedals because the height can be adjusted so that the bottom head can be 12" off the floor, instead of 10" -- which makes a big difference to me. I use a Pearl piccolo snare drum and a pair of chrome single head drums -- 6" and 8". It all sounds pretty good for such a small set-up. donothorpe@gmail.com
