Evans calftone

I have the Remo Suede paired with Fiberskyn Diplomats. The suede heads are tonally between a clear and a coated head. A little too thin sounding for a batter but great as a resonant.

I heard the first round of Calftones will be closer to the 12 mil weight with a 7ish mil possibly coming out later.

FROM EVANS:

" Made with a 7mil film base and blended with unique materials, these heads are thinner than our bass heads to help optimize the sound for smaller drums, higher tunings, and greater tonal response."

Thanks for the responses! Yeah I normally like a thin clear (pick your brand) reso side head and a nice coated batter. I found for live playing the clear heads have just a tad more projection. I do like the mellowing out effect of a coated reso head.

I will check out that Renaissance head. FWIW Evans also has a super thin Reso side head that is coated now.

So 7 mil coated reso head:

That is great to know! Some of the earliest rumors were that they were going to be a thicker head with a thinner head coming later. I much prefer a head this weight. I am now more excited than I was before! I still doubt they will be as thin as a Skyntone but I would be fine if they were a little thinner than Fiberskyn Diplomats.

On my "modern" Sonor kit I went through every head combination you could think of. Easily spent at least $500 plus in heads on that one kit. Anyway that kit has very thin maple shells with re-rings so you get that vintage feel and sound with modern easily tuned drums.

Point being depending on your kit and the sound you are after it is best to try several combinations. Drums I thought were just dogs were usually easily singing once I found the right heads.

What I like now is the ever growing amount of options and nice quality online sound clips. Really helps guide you in vs. spending a lot of $$ like a lot of us do finding the right setup.

Both FIBERSKYN & SKYNTONE have a 3mm spun material added, so I'm not sure how that effects the overall weight.

Both FIBERSKYN & SKYNTONE have a 3mm spun material added, so I'm not sure how that effects the overall weight.

From the Remo site:

The Diplomat Fiberskyn drumheads feature warm, open midrange tones with outstanding definition and controlled sustain. Featuring 1-ply of 7.5-mil film laminated to a 3-mil polyspun fiber.

The Diplomat Skyntone features warm tone and soft attack with a calfskin-like look and feel. Constructed with 1-ply of a special surface-treated 5-mil film laminated to a 3-mil polyspun fiber.

My point was that the Skyntone head is a thinner head overall whereas the Fiberskyn is a little thicker overall. I have and use both Fiberskyn Dips and Skyntone. I like them both.

Picked my Calftone head up today! I used a micrometer and took around 10 different measurements of the thickness. I got readings as low as 13 mil and as high as 15 mil. Mostly I got around 14 mil. I will mount this up tonight and see how it sounds tomorrow. It feels very similar to a Fiberskyn Diplomat with a little more give.

Did a SBS with the Calftones vs Fiberskyn Diplomats using 8x12 and 16x14 Slingerland toms. The Evans heads have shorter sustain, slightly more stick attack and the 360 design made for an easier fit than the Remo. They come across as similar Aquarian's vintage models. Surface is too slick for really good brush sounds. I'm now using the Fiberskyns as reso heads on the toms with the Calftones as batters. Nice combo for old school Slingerland toms!
