Ok.. went and grabbed my drum. ..Here are some closer photos of the throw off mechanism. The slotted screw in the left is the one that is hard to do up properly as the groove isn't as deep as the one in the right. Screwdriver is finding it hard to stay in the slot...Does anyone know if i can swap them for Philips/cross drive screws? Does anyone here have some i could buy? Or some brand new slotted would be OK as i feel i can get enough tension on the right screw. ..
TWO possible solutions for you to try:
1) Go to the hardware store and buy a replacement screw. This is often something we have to do with vintage MIJ. If one screw is not original - it's not a big deal.
2) Try using grosgrain ribbon instead of snare string. I'll even send you a free piece of it to try out. Just PM me your address.

There is a good chance that those will be the old JIS standard threads.
If you get a new screw don't force things. If they are old JIS threads neither SAE nor metric will not fit exactly and you will strip things. There are differing opinions on how to handle this. I prefer to find a screw that matches. On the other hand I have been able to use newer metric screws on a butt plate because only a small amount of the screw had to go into the plate. The amount of threads making contact was small enough that the mis-matched threads were/are not yet working against each other.
Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.

Cheers mate, very kind offer from you. I went and grabbed a length from local fabric shop and installed over the weekend. Results seem to be better but i would still like to find another screw anyway.

Cheers for the information mate, will see how i go trying to locate a screw now i know what the thread might be :-)
