Tama/Star kit for sale

Loading...

Hi fellas,

I saw this add on a german site. It looks like this could one of the very first Tama kits made, with Star hardware still.

The lugs are the sharktooth/teardrop models that Star used. The tom mounts are also from the Star era. Even the offset lugs on the rack toms are still from the Star era.

The badges are too blurry to read but it seems like there isn't even a series on the badge.

If I had the money I would snatch it in a heartbeat.

Ralf, what do you think about this kit? I would to hear what y'all have to say about this rarity. Underneath is the add but I downloaded the pictures just in case the add gets removed.

Cheers.

It is definetly not from the 60s like the add try to tell us:-)

Must be just around 74 or so - when STAR turned to TAMA...quite a nice kit. You should go for it :-)

Wait til RALF joins in-he will know!

regards

Christian

The drums have the "Flanged" teardrop lugs, which I THINK are the very last Star lugs. That set is transitional for sure. Very cool...

What should I add? - You're all 100 % correct, Sirs! ;)

The pics are too bad to get an image of the shell construction. I know from other 'Perfect Percussion' drum shells, that they had these excellent, heavy and lacquered birch shells with re-rings (just like my Royal Star drums). But these pics do not tell details ...

The only issue is the resonant side of the floor tom. Those lugs are NOT easy to find (in opposite to what the seller tries to tell us ...). That's a serious problem. Therefore the mentioned price is too high. Maximum EUR 100 - 150 would be my best guess.

Cheers, Ralf

In case you'll buy them. In the Netherland amounts of Van Der Glas and Majestic marching snaredrum are about. The pop up now and then on internet market. Same lugs. With some luck you can buy a drum for 20 euro's.

There are really models around that have single lugs?

Would love to see just one (for future reference).

The price dropped to €150 so I'm talking to the seller about buying the kit. As for the lugs I have a enough to supply the floor tom with.

The only issues are the bottom edges of the tom and if the bass drum has spurs or not. I would only need a hoop with tension rods but those are easy to find.

The kit would go nice with my Tama transition snare I own.

I did buy once Majestic/Van der Glas lugs for another Star snare I own but it didn't quite fit properly and the threads in the lugs insert were different so I gave them to a drum shop I often visit.

Those early Tamas have a great reputation in the vintage drum world - for being really solid and sleepers. Combine with that the cool Rogers type mounting, which is very vintage looking and very functional / reliable - and you have a great keeper kit.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Got it for €150 excluding shipping which wasn't that much (€50).

According to the seller the bearing edges on the bottom of the floor tom are intact and the bass drum spurs are there.

The wrap on the floor tom is a bit beat up but I can live with that.

So now we wait until it arrives. I'll take better pictures and post them :-)
