The one re-wrapped in the green satin flame looks like a Swingstar, but I can't see the interiors. Could very well be a Royalstar as well. For a period they used the same lugs. But for $250 with cymbal stands and a hi-hat stand,not a bad buy either. Of the kits the RM would be my choice, but that's because it's rare. Truthfully though any Tama made in Japan you can't go wrong with. Regardless of the line.

The current owner informed me that they've got a "gray speckled" interior. Would that help identify the model?

Yea that places them as Swingstars. Both them and the Imperialstars had the zola coating inside. Not sure how long the Swingstars had it, but it wasn't for very long.

Swingstars had it for about 10 years. Its not a Royalstar or Imperialstar they were 10 lug bass drums. (Royalstar did change to 8 lug in 1984 but had the step lugs)

Would a Swingstar kit with a hi-hat and cymbal stand be worth $200 as a practice kit or would it simply be a waste of money? I've never played or heard one. Thanks.

I love those old Swingstars! They are built like tanks & have a really nice tone IMHO. One of the better COS snares one can buy at that price. If it were near me I wouldn't think twice!

+1 with that. Seriously any Tama drum made in Japan is great. The swingstars are no exception, you will not be disappointed with that kit. I have a 8" that I added to my newer Swingstars ( my first new kit back in 2000 ) and man the 8" still gets used, the rest of the kit sits apart in storage. I actually play the 8" with my Imperialstars from 1984. Same wrap and same interior, and same badge style. For $200 with the drums and stands that's a good buy.

I'm planning on seeing the 4-piece green satin flame re-wrap kit (Swingstar?)with hi-hat stand and 2 cymbal stands in person this week. I realize that the satin flame wraps are prone to scuffs, scrapes, scratches and spider-webbing if not cared for properly. This one looks pretty good in the pics I've seen. Hopefully, it will be the same in person. Any idea which TAMA badge would have originally been on that particular kit?
