Vintage Ludwig Drums Kit

Loading...

I think I messed up my previous post.

Can anyone help me identify what I think are 1923 or earlier Ludig drum shell, rims and rods. I'd like to know value and how best to sell or donate.

The bass is 6x22 and the snare 3x12. The bass appears to be maple and the snare has a darker color. There are no serial numbers, etc. The bass has a "Ludwig" decal. They are in pretty good shape for their age and having been in my parents attic for 50 years. (I received them as a gift in the early 50's and played on them until I broke the skin heads.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Check this 1923 catalog page and see if you can find it:

The shells look very similar, but my bass is 6x22 and the 1923 catalog show 6x24.

It's likely that there were size-options available.

The value of your drums really depends on condition and completeness. Just the two drums by themselves would be nominal compared to what the value might be if it were a complete kit as depicted in the old catalog.

The value isn't easy to calculate without actually seeing them. Maybe our webmaster can help you out with posting the pictures.

The 6" X 22" is on this page (1924 catalog):

More reliable is to figure out the pic problem and someone here will probably give you an educated range of when they were made.

I appreciate your guidance. My set is very similar to the 1924 "Juvenile", but it looks like the 1924 set has a "keystone" badge on the hole, and mine has a round metal ring with a decal above the hole. Hopefully pics will get uploaded at some point in time.

I have a complete Juvenille kit or "Junior" kit and it has a black Bakelite grommet and a small rectangular decal above it. Many of the very early or "juvenille" sets were trademarked that way.

Here's my kit: *Note the decal/grommet:

The bass looks very similar, although my shell has no markings inside. The snare is also similar. Mine appears to have mahogany stain and the tension rod heads are squared off instead of rounded like yours and my bass rods.

It's very likely that your mahogany "stain" is, in fact, a real mahogany outer veneer.

I would have to see the square thumb rods and other details to make any further identification possibilities of the drums. try to work out that picture posting dilemma and we can continue!
