Good morning all!

So, I used Coated Ambassadors on the toms for the last 6-7 years that I've owned my 9/72 Rogers, and despite being pleased with the sound, I was seeking something completely different, maybe deeper, darker. I went down to the music store to browse and came home with a set of Aquarian Performance II's. I knew these were pretty heavy heads and figured I'd really turn everything upside down!

Well, ummmmm....YUCK! I'm not doing to bash the heads (no pun intended, and I've heard them on other kits) but is it possible they're just not meant for vintage drums? Anyone else try em? I've listened back to recordings with my band and I'm not very happy with the result. They've sucked all the life outta my drums! I have to play a bit harder in order to get anything out of them and it upsets the balance of the rest of the kit. Thought maybe they need to break in a bit, but I'm getting a little antsy. They feel sort of hard to play on, too!

Should have stuck to my original plan to use Coated Emperors...with heads, you live and learn!

If you like the Ambassador sound and you want something like that just deeper with less overtones but still a focused sound-you should haved sticked to your plan with the Emperor heads! They are great warm and fat sound;-) i have coated Emperors on my Rogers and they sound great!

+1 what Christian said! You will get the same overall sound character as the Ambassador heads, but fatter and warmer. Give them a try!

Oh, I am very familiar with them. Used 'em a whole bunch in the past, coated and clear, have some on other kits. I just got an itch for something different and it seems "I flew too close to the sun" on this one.

I've been in a funny way lately...sorta sick of the way all of my stuff sounds. The cymbals are next!

Aquarian American vintage medium heads sound awesome on oldies..I use a thin on the tom and a medium on the FT.

Keep fixing them up...

I agree..

The P2's did not work for me on '70s Slingerland toms either... However I have just gone back to Ambassador batters and am trying the P2's as Reso heads .... This seems to be working out fine, giving a little more "growl" control on my kit... especially the 18" FT..

I have become a fan of the Evans coated G12 and G14 heads for the batter side of toms, with coated G1 reso heads. They are thicker single ply heads . On my `68 Rogers kit, the G12 on the 12" tom with a G14 batter on the 16" tom sounds great to me.

I use coated Emperors on top and Coated Ambassadors on the bottom on all my Ludwig's and they sound incredible.

Seems like I always go back to the tried-and-true heads: Remo Ambassador and Emporer coated, along with Evans equivalents. I've spent a ton of money over the decades trying out new heads, mostly only to be disappointed. But, experimenting is the only way to find out! As to those Evans G12 and G14, they just didn't work for my sound. Way too thick for a single-ply head. I've also given Aquarian heads a fair trial over the years, but found them to be the deadest heads I've ever used. My apologies to Roy Burns, who is a great drummer and gentleman!

Agree except for the AQ' Classic Clear Reso heads... Which ring like a bell...
