'65 Rogers Jazz/Be-Bop in WMP

You really do dwarf that set Tommy. Nice looking stuff. Lot's of versatility with you WMP's. Makes me wonder; is your collection all Rogers and all WMP?

Let me take a moment and respond to a few of these comments/queries! ...

Dan Boucher! ... Indeed. ALL I own for drums are in WMP .. and .. all my sets are in BR configurations, with three of those sets actually being Buddy Rich models. My main TWO gigging sets .. ( and hands down my favorites! ) .. are both Rogers, with both of them being 1965's. I generally play them as OEM, but the beauty of these sets being both the same year with really good matching WMP!, allows me to "mix/match" as the gig requires. The "little" Jazz/Be-Bop set shown in this thread I most always play in this configuration. The only departure from the Rogers OEM set up is the addition of that orphan Rogers XP8 8X10 that I re-did to match these, and as DownTownFarmer/Mitch mentioned, the XP8 8X10 is perfect for balancing out the top and supplying a little more "spread" to the toms tonally. Truthfully, it also gives the set a taste more of a contemporary feel/sound as well. I can cover many bases with this "little" Rogers set! As to dwarfing them... being 6'1", I guess that I do! I can't imagine what the aesthetics would be if I sat up higher than I do! YIKES! Lastly, the whole WMP thing with me started way back in 1967 when I discovered Buddy Rich. Many of you know that I am a BR freak, hence that snare drum collection of mine!, and all the sets I have that ARE Buddy Rich models!

JR! ... So glad you enjoy! I don't know that they're the coolest drums, but I always have a smile on my face playin' all of them! And, the really neat thing is, I can cover ANY STYLE of music between those two sets, with the added beauty of the Jazz/Bop set being portability!, and still in my standard set up that takes up a little LESS real estate. Miked up they sound "bigger" than they are, and pretty contemporary!

longjohn! ... I would say NO!, as I am hideous. But Deb THANKS YOU!

Steveo! ... He is indeed GREEN!, and I am probably the size of one of his legs!

DownTownFarmer! ... Yes indeed! The XP8 8X10 is like the PERFECT size/sound for this set! The really neat thing is that I do have the 8X12 of course, and... that is currently residing with my '65 Buddy Rich Celebrity's. I switched out the standard toms for an 8X12, and two 14X14's, which has worked out really well both tonally and size wise. If needed, I can slide the 9X13 and twin 16X16's right back in without changing anything! It really is neat to be able to do this too! Here's a bit of an overhead view of the '65 BR Celebrity's with the 8X12 and twin 14X14's. Kind of deceiving as it's a little tough to tell that the toms are a little smaller.

Kelly!

Glad you enjoyed, and THANKS! I do recall that you have essentially the same set, and also in WMP! That said, YES!... there is indeed an overhead/condenser to pick up the ride/crashes. There was a sound company at this gig, so they miked up the drums .. but .. when I do my own miking, I always use an overhead as well... especially so for the ride cymbal as so much of the jazz/swing pulse is on the ride. The crashes bleed into the other mikes and are always present. Here are a couple shots from that gig, and you can see the overhead. It kinda blended into the pic due to the background. Have a great gig!

Tommy,

Thanks for sharing those great pics. You know I've heard you play that 18", and I'm amazed at the sound it puts out... not just the volume, but the tone and pitch also. You seem to get a nice low pitch out of that small bass. Love it.

So where was that venue? Here in CT? I love the chrome garland behind your kit. It gives your vintage Rogers set a nice 1960's cocktail lounge vibe. Perfect.

Just to make you jealous, I played a formal military banquet last Saturday night in the main display hall of the Bradley Air Museum. For the dinner, we played classic 40' and 50's jazz surrounded by a dozen WWII vintage warbirds. Strangest venue I've ever played in, but I know you would have appreciated it.

Nice Tommyp! Thanks for sharing. Awesome as usual.

And I expected Sonny & Cher to come out from behind that garland curtain singing "I Got You Babe"...

Mike!

THANKS as always for chiming in, and the very kind words! You did indeed hear this exact set with the Sinatra Show. I was actually a little bummed that I didn't bring out my Celebrity's for the gig you were at truth be told. Anyway!... the venue is in CT. It's the "Aqua Turf" in Southington. There were two acts/shows on the bill this day, so that's why I opted for the smaller drums: Ease of moving/portability, plus... I knew they had pro sound so everything would be miked, and then... these sounded LARGE! The "chrome" garland was a surprise actually. I've played more than a few shows there, but they never had that before. I have to say that it looked incredible with the house lights down and the stage lights up... plus the spot. SHOW TIME!

Too cool on the gig at BAM! I DO appreciate it Mike 'cause I too have done a couple gigs there! We did a couple dates for UT/P&W. On break I walked around the museum till I found the WWI display, and specifically the 1917 Fokker Dr.I triplane. That was on loan from the Rhinebeck Aerodrome courtesy of Cole Palen. I wonder if it's still there?! Sounds like it was a FUN gig Mike!

larryz!

Right?! That backdrop SCREAMS the 60's! I did get a kick out of it I have to say. THANKS for the kind words Larry, and glad you enjoyed! Here's another view in "old school" black and white...
