70's Ludwig Restoration Project

From DownTownFarmer

That outer seam you're showing looks pretty Ludwig to me. Very similar to a Pioneer I have. Also the mix 'n match casing interiors is something that could come on one drum from the factory though I could be wrong about that...there was some discussion here about the issue in reference to a Vistalite kit.Mitch

Really!?!

I will certainly digress to the knowledge of those who have more time with this brand.

The other thing that throws me off is the lack of vent holes on both the rack toms, but I won't be able to confirm that until I can get the interior paint job un-done.

Getting closer to finalizing my plan with these, but just need a lot of time, which I don't have.

I did finally take a dive into some of the hardware that came with it. The snare stand is a period correct Atlas, complete with decades of neglect. It's still structurally sound though and looks like it has enough of a rise to be a nice tom mount.

Really!?!

Yep see pic. This is the Pioneer that came with my Club Dates where for some reason somebody shifted all the lugs over an inch...why?!....anyway you can see the seam is quite "proud" and not flush or otherwise impressive.

The casing deal was something like, as they got new designs in, they would still be using up the old ones, so certain shells might get both or even all three, if someone found an old box in the back...something like that.

No vents on the toms though......hmmm.

Interesting indeed.

Before I go all silly on the interiors, is there any compelling reason why I shouldn't use paint stripper?

Only the fact that acetone is quicker [immediate] and gets you higher...:)

...well I really did use acetone on some of my Club Dates but I'm a bit of a hack. You're basically wiping off the paint, going through a lot of rags......yeah I'd use paint stripper, it's safe. Maybe plug the holes to avoid getting it in the plies..

Almost done with the Supra...

Got it fully gutted and scrubbed, lugs lubed and repacked. Still needs new heads and wires, any suggestions on the best set for this?

I think I have a set of Puresound Blasters (20's) laying around, but am game for anything different.

That's funny, I saw that kit listed too! Thought about it for a minute, may have even book marked it,lol. Great score, keep us posted with the work. And for a lot of my snares of late I have been going with the Evans St Dry for top and either the Evans Hazy snare side, or my always go to Remo Diplomat. Haven't been disappointed yet.

Thanks ;)

I was thinking more along the lines of snare wires. I'll probably stick with the Puresound 20's that I think I still have, just wondering if there's something noticeably better.

Heads will be Remo Coated Ambassador over Evans Hazy 300

There is just something about the lines on these drums that make them stand out among all others...

Gorgeous! My Supraphonic was a gift from a friend and sadly saw too many years in a basement. The chrome finish was beyond roached, so I decided at the time ( maybe not the best decision ) to paint it solid white. Actually looks killer, but she is forever designated to player.

It's been a minute...

I have finally pulled the trigger and sold my 70's Gretsch Progressive Jazz kit to help fund the restoration on this project that has been collecting dust for a few years now, because... life.

That being said, I'm still trying to nail down my choice of wrap, and am wondering why Mod Orange keeps calling to me.

Does anyone else see that as a need?

Pic for influential reference
