"Classy" is an under-statement! Wow...it's beautiful!
Ludwig's Top Hat & Cane 90th Anniversary
1963 Ludwig Gold Sparkle Hollywood Kit
Ludwig Collection: 10 Vintage Snare Drums, 4 Customized Vintage Snare Drums, 4 Vintage Foot Pedals, 1 Single Value Bugle
"Apparently there aren't many full kits about...i know that joey kramer, bun e carlos, and todd trent have the 90th anniversary kit too.. "
Haven't been on in awhile but I have a complete set of TH&C wrap drums from Jack using the Ludwig Drum Co. 90th anniversary TH&C Pearl. Started the project over 12 years ago. Took awhile but so worth the wait and completed in 2004. Jack is the best... Jack made a badge/sticker for each drum and signed it. The set consists of the following configurations (All 70-72 ludwig clear interior MPM 3 ply shells choosen) 5X6, 5X8, 9X13, 16X16, 16X18, 14X20 and 14X22 kicks and 6.5 x 14 snare. Also, only Ludwig hardware was used. I remember this being a requirement at the time which was certainly fine by me. Truly a beautiful kit and sounds amazing!!!
Still got my Top Hat & Cane anniversary kit...got a letter from Mr Lawton to confirm he re-wrapped it and apparently mine was the last one he did form the originial anniversary wrap..
Was wondering on an approximate selling price, if one day I decide to sell it... many thanks...

Jack created a tag for me, signed and attached it to all the interiors of my TH&C anniversary drums. Maybe he can make these tags for you so you can adhere them to the interior of the drums? A letter is good but don't loose it! Bun E Carlos also has a kit. Rich King had one too. Not sure what a selling price would be... That's a tough one.
TAG states: (tag is in the interior of each drum)
"This drum was custom finished in the Ludwig Drum Co. 90th anniversary "Top Hat & Cane" Pearl for Jim Kakavas by the Lawton Drum Co. Sunbury Pennsylvania 2004" Jack signed each tag.
No question as to who made it, when and with what finish.
My top hat set, and Todd Trent's (he's since sold his set) were the only two with oval badges.
Joey Kramer, and a few other endorsers and customers got sets with the big keystone badges.
Joey's set had some damage, it got stored by a heating vent for a few years and some drums are discolored I was told.
The 90th Anniversary sets, needless to say, are rare and prices really aren't established.
Price wise I think the two oval badge sets and the big keystone sets would bring more money than old shells rewrapped by Jack.
Jack Lawton wrapped all the sets. And, he made sets with his own badge on them.

BEC,
I wonder if that heating vent that caused the alleged damage was in the R&R Hall of Fame in Cleveland. About 4 or 5 years ago, I saw Joey's TH&C set on display there. I examined it closely, and was even scolded by one of the attendants for touching it (I was just feeling to see if the black TH&C graphic was overprinted on top of the WMP or imbedded inside the wrap). The wrap appeared clean, bright, and even-colored at that time. If discoloration occurred, it must have been after that point in time.
TH&C and Leedy's Autographs of the Stars remain two unique wraps that just ooze a vintage look, but I still wonder if it's possible to duplicate these just by having a graphics company silkscreen the TH&C or Autograph graphic on top of stock wrap. Oh, well, just one more thing to experiment with in the distant future.
Mike
Thanks for the great information. At the time, Jack and I both agreed to keep the original B/O badges on my 90th anniversary rewrap as opposed the Lawton badge. My first gigging kit was a Ludwig gold sparkle B/O badge kit so I am partial. Jack said at the time, there were no other kits he had wrapped in the TH&C 90th anniversary finish that used B/O badges. The 3 ply maple/poplar/maple (clear interior) shells I think are some of the best shells Ludwig ever made. Not selling anytime soon :)
PA show Oct. 17th!!

I think Joey's drums were discolored at his own warehouse space out East. I was told about the discoloration by the fellow that purchased a lot of his 80's and 90's gear a couple years back.
I purchased Todd Trent's oval badge top hat set back in September 2005. If anyone is still interested in this thread let me know and I'll share additional information.
