Sonor D453 question

A fellow drummer gave me this snare. He did not like the sound, he described as "clunck". It was slightly out of round, so he thought that was the problem. Ok, thanx. I had it lying around for a while. Today I made it in round again (which was a piece of cake), I put heads on it, spend some time tunig it and to me it sounds very good!. It apears my friend just doesn't like metal drums.

Because the shell had no rust I suspected it to be COB. I checked under a lug-washer with my Dremel. Yep, COB.

Now my question. I am pretty sure this is a D453 as seen in:

But, these are COS drums. My shell is COB.

Could it be, this drum was "upgraded" during his life?

Shell has one extra hole I don't quite understand. It may indicate that shell and hardware dit not originally belong together.

Anyone something so say about it?

It`s a D453, and it`s a starter kit snare of some quality.

It should be Ferromanganese, Nickel, Copper then Chrome.

An on going investigation has reveled that some of the ferro snares are magnetic and some are not. None of the Phonic/ budget snares were Brass or Copper shell. How heavy is it ?

The auto company that SONOR purchased the Ferro sheet metal from delivered different mixtures of Ferro, it was never intended to be for snare drums.

The shell is not magnetic.

Maybe I saw a little of the copper when grinding with my dremel.

Grinding did not give sparks, as metal would.

The weight: I find it a little heavy for a 14x5 drum, but that may be due to the quite massive lugs and the thick sonor-screws.

No, that's not a missing screw, that's the point. It's an extra hole of which I don't understand the function.

The hole may have been used for the hook that holds the shell while it is lowered into the various plating baths.

I forgot about that, mine is on the edge fold but this makes sense .

Disassembled the drum today (gonna clean and sell it).

The extra hole is definitely factory made and is equally covered in chrome as the the other holes. it has a bigger diameter than the other holes. The drum has no visible airvent. Maybe this hole was meant as a airvent that was hidden under the throw-off.

I wish some other d453 owner would cime in and tell if his drum has the same shell.
