I (mistakenly) bought what I thought was a "player grade" Phonic 4x14 snare that turned out to have been made from a 10x14 tom (this I figured out upon realizing that the lugs were too long for the shell at the arm on the throw would get jammed in the hoop, and the fact that such was never cataloged). Changing the throw (from Sonor to a Gibraltar that doesn't get jammed in the hoop), the top hoop (from stick to an S-Hoop), heads, and snares (beat up Sonors to PureSound) in the hopes of getting this thing to sound better than "meh" have so far been fruitless.
Not trying to infer that your results will be the same as mine, just adding in my experience. Thick shell snares are usually loud and have a lot of punch. However, this one, while sounding good with the snares off, sounds too "snare-ee" with them on, and though the conversion looks to have been professionally done (which is how I was tricked in the first place), I'm wondering whether the snare beds are too narrow/too shallow?
