Premier 60's 22" BD project

Loading...

I had this drum for some time now. When I got it had a non-original tom mount although it was Premier but from a later era. The badge was moved to a new position because of that new tom holder and the BD hoops were painted black over the original silver.

Here it is with a 14" TT and 16" FT from the same era:

the drum had at some point two 60's Premier "round tom holders". That's 3 holes each. This baby had a lot of extra holes. Using some shell leftovers from previous projects I manage to plug all those holes and repainted the hoops in the original silver.

I needed to get some wrap to make look nice again but time and money being scarce this project has just being on hold for some time now.

Four weeks ago I managed to get some (free) WMP that someone discarded. This baby is getting back to shape. Here it is with the badge moved to the original position and an original "round tom mount" back in place.

I always played a bop kit so to my ears this 22" drum sounds huge.

I drilled all the mounting holes and reassembled the drum. Still have to get some spurs but it already looks good!

Repaint the hoops and cut the inlays. Glue them and I'm done.

Cleaned the old Everplay head that came with it. I'm going to try it 1st as a batter. If it doesn't work I'll just use it as a reso head and the new ambassador as batter.

Just before assembling the drum I did the final touches on those plugs.

Here's a before shot for comparison:

Great work!!!

I've got a bass drum from that era and that has a modern tom mount unfortunately. One of the legs is missing and I could do with the drum mounted cymbal arm too as the zoomomatic is still intact.

That's one classy looking drum. Thanks Jcymbal for the restoration pics. I love the hardware, the small claws and the one-sided handles... gives a very clean kind of appearance.... I've never really noticed that before. The hoops are way cool too. Wow...

Thanks again... BTW, the Sonor resto process in another thread was awesome as well... I really learn a lot when you pros post the whole process for us fledglings....

I don't know if you are the same guy who did that tear drop set a while ago. But if so you are the best drum restorer I know. Keep up the cool projects.

I love those old sonor drums but my heart is still with pre-1967 Premier.

Thank you for the kind words.

jcymbal, can you tell me what you used to clean up the bass drum head. I have an old Sonor head with stains that I'd like to resurrect if possible. Thanks in advance!
