Mij "capri"

I rarely post here. I rather lurk, read and learn.

I just wanted to share a couple photos of the kit we picked up last week for $125.

As per the title, the badge reads "Capri" made in Japan. The black MOP is beautiful and I'd give its condition an 8 out of 10. There's a couple very small ripples in it ahead of the lugs but otherwise, it is fantastic.

Lucky me, the store was scratching its head regarding what to do in selling the kit as they only had one tom mount. It just so happens that I have a second spare laying around!

Anyways, its a great sounding drum for what its worth. I certainly wasn't expecting anything like that: a nice fat "thump" on the kick.

If anyone has any idea what shop would have made these I'd appreciate it.

PS, I work with some great people. We happen to have a couple VERY large printers and so we created BD decal at work today. I thought it worked out pretty good.

Cool bass drum head! Not sure what factory made those, might have been Pearl.

Yes indeed it is Pearl. If the shells have no rerings it is 1968 or later. If it has the thinner shells with the rerings, then it is 1967 or earlier.

That is a beauty! What helps create the thumpy BD is the rounded over edges. Of course it always helps to use a good head, and I always recommend the Aquarian SKI, but I am sure an Evans EMAD would work as well.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

However, now that I look close at the BD spurs and the rail consolette, it might actually be the Dodge of MIJ drums, a Hoshino. Hopefully some other MIJ enthusiasts will chime in here to confirm.

I recognize the kit, looks exactly like the "lynx" kit I special painted (check:http://vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=48266). And so it also looks like Hoshino indeed. That makes it pre-tama, if I'm not mistaking.

Of my Lynx I perfected and smoothened the round-over bearing edges. Put coated ambs top and bottom, and put an coated emperor as bass drum batter head and an ambassador as reso. I was very pleasantly surprised by the sound. Warm, big and fat. I had to sell it to make space for other projects, but that kind of hurted, just because it sounded so good.

Wow! Thank you so much for the info and feedback. No, there are no re-rings inside the kick. I'll have to count the ply(s) but it is definitely luan with what looked like at least 1 layer of maple(?).

The whole family here is a musical bunch; the wife studied years ago at the conservatory of Veracruz, our little guy Brandon (7) is our budding drummer. He got a small Granite Perc kit this Christmas from Santa and is now loving this kit too. Our eldest 14 year old is one of the most talented I've seen. He's studying guitar and turned into a huge Hendrix, May, Clapton and Santana fan. Aside from that, he plays bass and much to my surprise, on the drum throne this kid has got chops. The surprising thing was that he has yet to take a single drum lesson. It just comes naturally to him!

Anyways, I'm getting off topic here..

I'll be looking to upgrade the skins in the very near future here. Along with the Aquarian SKI batter head what do you recommend for the resonant side head?

Drummerjohn, I assume the "Dodge" reference is a good thing:)

I've had this strange little 14" sitting around for quite a while and never knew what to make of it. My only guess is that it was made in the Carlton factory, hence the same badge. Funny that both finds are "Capri"

On another note, locally someone is selling an old Raven kit that I can probably grab for $100. Might be alright for the 7 year old to beat on as his second set
