70's Ludwig project.

From OddBall

See now Jeff, if you adjust your thinking a bit,..."this kit will sell" or "it has my name on it", and since you`ve no place to store them, .."went out the door", all keep Jeff linked to the kit.

Ya, Im gonna try and make this my best restoration yet. With new edges, clean/clear maple interior and a real nice stain and finish these drums should be worth something. I kinda flew through my other projects, missing out on some small but important details, well the Rogers XP8's are an exception, I did baby those.

Thank you!

Taking one's time is a great idea....and something I never manage to do...:) If I did, I'd have a nice 4" tapered join on that BD I cut down...among other things.

Looking forward to more slow and careful progress on this kit of yours...

Mitch, I would not even attempt what you did with that bass drum. I admire your eagerness to take on such a challenge.

Im actually not a person that works real slow, all of my life it seems like every job is a "can you have it done tomorrow" kind of job. But since this is not a paying job and I have total control over who long it takes, well then for once Im gonna slow it down and see just how good I can do.

If I post too much detail or boring stuff just let me know. I like to share what Im doing, hell, no one around here cares about it, except my wife, but she can only take so much, ha ha.

Thank you!

Okay, cant use screws with paint on them when the shell has been stripped down to raw maple, right?

Soaked in lacquer thinner overnight, the paint will brush right off.

The bass drum shell is close to being done. I have stripped, scraped and sanded it. Still a little paint here and there in the corners but I will get that out as well. I took a close up of one of the tough places to clean, its on the ring. The edges are coming out real nice on all of the shells, I bet there gonna sound great!

My halogen light gave the shell an orange looking tint, it really looks like raw maple in person.

Jeff,

What did you use to get the paint off? Regular paint stripper? Nice work!

I used some heavy duty stripper I bought from Lowes,

http://www.lowes.com/pd_211752-34228-CR.TS.M.41_4294729354__?productId=3024382&Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNs%3Dp_product_qty_sales_dollar%7C1%26page%3D2&facetInfo=

Here is a better picture of the shell and how it really looks. One with flash and one without. I used the stripper to get 90% of the paint off then a utility knife blade to scrape away the paint that was in the corners where the shell and ring meet. Then the entire drum was sanded with 120 grit. I will now sand with some 150, then spray the lacquer.
