Slingerland Radio King Student model

Loading...

I'm going to start off by saying that I am kind of new to the vintage drum scene. I recently bought a Slingerland Radio King Student model. I thought that it was a regular Radio King until I visited the forum....I was sad, haha. It does however have great bearing edges, and everything functions properly. The price was okay at $160...it has some scratches and such. My question is how do the two models compare sound-wise? I have heard that some even prefer the 3ply student model. Are their any notable musicians that often used these? Also, can anyone recommend a head/snare wire combo that they prefer?

Thanks

You didn't do badly....it wasn't a deal, but you didn't do badly.

6-lug, or 8-lug ?

Dunno if anyone famous used 'em, but IMHO, they are as good as the higher line Slingys from back then. Good shells, good hardware, good edges.

Thank you for the info! It's the 8 lug. I would post pictures but I can't find the USB cable to import the pictures from my camera.

I'm curious, did you find a head combo that works for you for your Student Radio King? I have one also, and would appreciate some info....

Here's mine... it's a '63 I believe

I ended up getting rid of it, unfortunately. I do, however, recommend trying the new Remo Skyntone head. It feels great to play and produces a rich and warm tone. I think of it as the best characteristics of the ambassador and fiberskyn combined into one head. This is just my opinion, though....

I hope this helps!.....Amazing Radio King BTW!

Mine has the most annoying mid-high-end-ring-buzz from somewhere with just the skins on, no snares in the room. Lug nut, maybe?

All kidding aside, I would take the heads off and make sure all of the lug screws are tight. If this does not fix your problem I would try taking extreme care in tuning and listening to the harmonics as you tap the head near each lug point. I have an old WFL snare that has some great harmonics when tuned properly. When it isn't tuned just right has this echoing ring that makes the snare wires pulsate with the echo...that's the best way I can describe it, haha.

If your snare still makes all of these noises without the wires activated, I would suspect that it may be in the strainer mechanism.

If the wires are activated and it makes the annoying noise, I would slightly loosen the four lugs on either side of the wires and focus on fine tuning the harmonics of the top head. This should elminiate some of the snare wire's response to the harmonics while maintaining most of it's sensitivity.

I hope this helps!
