Homemade Psychedelic Red Wrap

Loading...

From Matt M

Yes, the refinishing job looks good, but I want to hear more about the specifics of "a guy playing it on a raft the last 40 years"!What is that all about?

I just assumed the guy was lost at sea for forty years with nothing but his Psycho.Red kit and a soccor ball named Wilson. :p

First, no one welcomed Tom the the forum! Welcome Tom, and where have you been? Sounds like you can bring a wealth of restoration knowledge to our community. I'm anxious to hear how you "make" your own wraps.

I've seen some other very good homemade psych red wraps which were made by scanning (and photoshopping) at high resolution section of actual wrap and then reproducing it. Companies like www.sicskinz.com use pvc to print anything on and laminate in a thin UV coating. There are a few others employing a similar process.

Thanks a lot for all the comments!!! It took a while and nerves get it done.

The BD had only one ply left at the bottom with some cracks. other two plys were molded and cracked, both I removed. Filled the cracks with glue and got some sheets of wood glued in the gaps where the molded layers have been. high pressure over 3 days. Did a lot of sanding inside the shell. Same on top to close the double tom hole. BD is solid now holding tom and cymbal. I always have mics inside the BD and I can say, it sounds like the other 22“ 3ply´s I have.

For the wrap I photographed those parts of the original wrap with less or no fading. After that I did some computer graphics, finally found a guy who does the printings (not easy). Now I have sheets of 60“ x 20“.

Removed original wrap on BD and 18“, grounded and sanded them. On 12“, 13“ and 16“ I left the original wrap. Last step was covering the shells with the self adhesive new wrap.

As I saw the kit the first time I was swallowing, water and sun did their job over the years. But now I´m very happy with the result!!!

Thank you Mike for welcoming me to the forum!

The rafting thing: I will post some pics so you can see those „river-gigs“ Nothing to do with sea world ;-) great comment Matt LoLoLoLo

Hi Tom welcome to the forum~! Real nice repair on the inside. Looks nice and solid. Great job on making the new wrap too. Once you get the graphics done that's half the battle. Nice size sheets too. How hard was it to find a place that could print the wrap if you don't mind me asking? I often wonder how well the local printing and copy places that make banners would do on something like this. Since they can run on vinyl and plastics. I assume it was a digital file and if so were you limited to a CMYK color format? Or could they produce spot colors too? How thick is the substrate they used? Sorry for all the questions. It's a interesting topic for sure.

You'll enjoy the hang here lots of great people.

Glenn.

Awesome job Tom. Looks like you do very good work. Beautiful kit! I'm interesting to see the floating gig scene. I played on a floating stage on a river one time. As we were loading in I had my rug rolled up next to the edge of the stage. To my horror I watched my rug roll off the edge and quickly float off down river! I quickly made sure the rest of the kit was stable and not close to rolling off.

Those drums look great ! Great save on the bass drum. Looks like you fit that filler ply in perfectly. Would love to have a scan of the Top Hat and Cane wrap.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Great job restoring it, the surgery was the way to go. Were you able to get under the rings or just butt up ? That`s usually what stops people from performing the graphing and resort to filling layers. Again beautiful work, very professional.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Manny - Precision does computer printed wrap. It is really expensive, but the results are as good as you can get.

If you have Photoshop on your computer, creating a mosaic is not too hard. Where the skill comes in is matching the streaks in the finish so it doesn't look like some assembled a bunch of tiles where you can see the edges of each square. If you can line up the images properly, it'll look as good as the original. Takes patience and careful work, but do-able.

Too many great drums to list here!
