1966 Black Oyster

Hello,

What is market value?

April 11 1966 stamp on snare. Looks like a Pioneer. No date on bass or toms. Serial numbers coincide with 1966. I think they are Club Date or Combo.

20 bass 12 rack tom 14 floor tom 14 snare drum.

All drums are original and in great shape. The heads are all mid 60's Ludwig brand.

The bass drum is missing both legs and cymbal stand.

It came with original Ludwig leather bags which are in great shape.

Also came with box of six cymbals 12in to 16in. Brands I do not recognize from the 60's. Also two 60's snare stands and two 60's cymbal stands.

I am not interested in selling. At the time of purchase I thought it was a steal but after doing some research I'm not so sure.

What do you guys think?

What would you say is a fair price to pay?

Thanks in advance.

I'd say $800. What did you get it for?

$850-950 for the kit, $100 for the bags. Kit would have been worth a few hundred more if it wasn't the double-loaded Clubdate lugs...I dunno why, but lotsa folks don't seem to like those, although personally I like 'em a lot.

You are leaving me breathless, however, by NOT describing the cymbals more. They might be some nice ones...more info/pics, please.

I'm almost positive your set is worth around $1,000. Watch this ebay ad and then add another $300 when it ends.

Search in ebay "Vintage Oyster Black 1966 Ludwig Club Date"

Originally asking $1800. I got them for few hundred less.

I will post pics of the cymbals later. I believe one had "bestone" engraved on it.

Oh wow, just when I was thinking "that's a yard sale I'd like to stumble upon". Very nice set, though.

As far as so-called "fair market" value goes, a kit identical to yours (OBP Clubdates; 12/14/14/20 configuration) recently sold on e-Bay as "stand-alone" items for the following prices (rounded):

Snare -- $600

Rack Tom -- $165

Floor Tom -- $356

Bass Drum -- $250

The above pieces total $1,371.00. Add another $100.00 for the bags, as Jaye suggested and you're at $1,471.00.

You mentioned two cymbal stands. If they're original Ludwig flat base stands from that time period, they'd go anywhere from $50 - $100 (ballpark) each, so you'd either be at $1,571.00 or $1,671.00.

You've also got to consider the cymbals that came with your kit. Not knowing what brand or condition they're in I won't even take a guess at the additional value.

It sounds to me that AT THE VERY WORST you at least broke even. Under the BEST SCENARIO, you did quite well.

Buyers just seem to love the OBP finish, due to the Ringo connection.

BTW...............The drums you purchased look to be in much better condition than those that sold for the $1,371.00 addressed above.

It also looks like they have the original heads.Thats a plus from a collectors point of view. Take those off and save them, or play them and get the best tone on earth.;)

When I purchased the kit the seller told me that the original owner purchased them for a sibling who died shortly after. The drums were put away in the attic till now. Because of the good condition and original heads I believed it. Today I was on ebay looking at a similar kit, 1960 Club Date, and the same story was written, "drum set purchased for son who died, drums in attic...."

Is this a common line? Have you all heard this 1000 times?

That's odd.

Do you have a link for that auction? I can't find it when I search for "Ludwig Club Date".
