Vintage ?Zildjian? ?1960s?

Loading...

These hi hats I have here I have owned for 5 years. It had no stamp on it, and I couldn't research it very well. I recently went to Sam Ash (the people who work in the drum section are GENIUSES) and I couldn't get any information. the only way to get info was to go to google and search vintage hi hats and look at the way they are hammered, and are believed to be 1960's Zildjian A's, but they weren't certain. I'm hoping someone here could help me with this set of hi hats I have.

Maybe Chinese? They do look a lot like K's, but without that trademark they can't be.

I was thinking Chinese as well, while I was scrolling through those pics. Then I got to your post Bill, and thought I probably had the right "gut feeling". Those really remind me of Dream cymbals (but there are a number of Wuhan based manufacturers). I've got a pair of hats and a crash and together they have aspects which remind me of those.

** edit ** As this thread has developed I realize that I should have been more specific (as I am later on). The general morphology matches, the hammering matches (on both bell and bow), the lathing does not match. See below.

Wow, I decided to check more into dream cymbals, and after listening to videos of even the 2014 models, it sounds very similar to dream bliss hi hats.

Not sure if you were being sarcastic or not, but after many years of frequenting a half dozen Sam Ash stores in my region, my experience is that most of their drum staff is barely knowledgeable about current cymbal offerings and is almost completely clueless about vintage cymbals. There are a few guys in different stores, usually the managers, who are much more knowledgeable, but even they know relatively little about differentiating between the various vintage Zildjian cymbal stamps.

I have a 20" and 22" Dream Bliss. The lathing and hammering on my copies don't resemble the OP's pictures at all. As Bill indicated, they do look a lot like K's. My Dreams do not.

Yea, that's kind of true. The ones here in Florida are pretty knowledgeable, especially the Orlando Colonial Dr. one, but they really don't want to help you most of the time except if you are wanting to sell the cymbals.

I also have a vintage 1960 ride (it does have a stamp) that they decided to check out, and they believe that it is not an A because of the way it's hammered

My 1960's Ride (Yes, it's on a hi hat stand, I just pulled it out real quick)

Bill Hartrick - Drumaholic on this and other sites. He is the gentleman who researched the time lines based on stamps, lathing and hammering, and created the naming conventions in general use today for vintage Zildjian cymbals.
