A quick one - what are the tricks out there for protecting the bass drum hoop from getting damaged and dented by the bass pedal's clamp?

I've been using the soft part of velcro, I get the wide roll (2" I think) and stick it to the part and then trim around with a blade. This works really well for clamp on spurs.

I'm putting the velcro on the metal parts, not the hoop..wanted to be clear on that.

I've been using a strip of thickish leather. You can tighten down on it enough so the pedal doesn't move, but it keeps the wood undented or scratched (so far!) I pulled a wad of duct tape off of a bass I bought, so that's been done, but it left behind a lot of goo.

Leather sounds like a great idea! I just take a bit of cardboard (like from a cardboard box) and crease it so that it wraps around the bass drum hoop and then I clamp the pedal down -but I never really torque down on it too much.

Another idea that might work is to get some of those adhesive back heavy duty felts that are used to put under heavy things like television stands, etc. so that the floor doesn't get scratched.

I almost NEVER clamp my pedal to the kick.

My pedal is Velcro'd to the floor, and I rest the kick on the pedal and dig the spurs into the rug.

So far, all of the kicks I do this with work out great, they sound better and have the added benefit of no pedal clamp marks. (although most of the kits I have ALREADY had clamp marks, I do it for tone mostly)

I use a hunk of chamois cloth cut to a square and wrapped around the hoop. Most of my kits have metal hoops so it's not as much of an issue. I still use the chamois on them though.
