Unidentified MIJ snare

Loading...

I don't usually bother with MIJ stuff - most of them are found in the U.S. and it costs a lot of money to bring them here, money that is better spent on better drums (i.e. Sonors, Premiers etc). This one was different. Firstly, it was in the U.K., so much cheaper to get. Secondly, it's a 10-lugger, 14x8 - not very common I thought. So I pulled the trigger and a few days later, voila :)

I think it must have been wrapped once, only someone removed it. Most of the top lugs are cracked, as is the top hoop (but it's not original anyway, so not a problem). Part of the butt-end is missing (I think?), no badge or stamp, no reso head or wires. The thing reminds me of an early 1980s Pearl I saw once, but the strainer, muffler and the wire mechanisms say 'Tama'-clone. I hope you guys can say more, I'm completely clueless when it comes to MIJ. Pics follow.

More pics. Some of the tension rods were - surprisingly - Premier, the very same stuff found in Hi-Fi and Royal Ace. Those will come in very handy, I needed some anyway. Also, my seller was kind enough to throw in a non-original lug (to compensate for the one missing), which looks very much like a Fibes. The last pic shows my initial attempt to cleaning - I used a slightly damp cloth to remove dust and stuff from the shell in the area between the lugs.

I think this is a slight Frankenstein model.

Here is what I think the parts are:

Tama Shell. Pearl 70's lugs. Tama One Touch Muffler. Generic Pearl copy throw off handle.

Maybe a Pearl jupiter throw off system. Not sure about the throw off system...yet.

Looks like big fun sound to me.

Hey, I recently got some Thunder drums. You can see my post about that here. The lugs on this snare are similar to the Thunder / Maxwin drums. Pearl 70's lugs! :D Which our friend green grass drums has pointed out.

I think you could put any old MIJ badge on this and let that be the make. They were all more or less the same, right? Although I've not seen another one like this. The snare mechanism looks very cool. That's a keeper!

+1

Another suggestion: someone had all the parts laying around and a 14" floor tom. He cut out the middle of the drum shell, put somehow round edges onto it and installed all the parts he had to make it look like a deep 14" snare drum.

Hmmm OK.... Thanks for the suggestions guys. As I said, different parts of it reminded me of different brands. Ralf, what makes you think this was a floor tom once? Just curious to know the signs. Was it indeed wrapped once?? And what does the missing butt look like?

I'm gonna be busy with this one for a while I think. That said, I've always wanted a snare in green or aqua sparkle, this may be it :)

Wasn't the Zola coating greyish to white only?

From Cyllocke

... Ralf, what makes you think this was a floor tom once? Just curious to know the signs...

10 cheap Pearl-style lugs, the mishmash with added Tama parts ... (see post of green glass drums). The whole thing doesn't look significant/ costy to me.

It would be the easy way to take the middle shell part for the making of a snare drum: you don't have to consider any holes from previously installed parts. So you're free in the making of the drum.

Well, the muffler is definitely 1970s Tama (I found the exact same item on e-bay), lugs and strainer are Pearl-like, and I think so's the original hoop. The strainer in particular is an SR-015 Gladstone type, commonly found in 1970s Pearl snares. Beyond that.... no clue as yet. Been trying to find some info on the butt side, the one that's missing a part; so far no luck at all. Nothing even remotely similar. Also, there seems to be a horizontal mark/cut on the shell, like a factory-made groove (3rd pic, top of the missing lug). Not sure what that's for?

Drum's stripped now and the hardware is soaking nicely in dish-soap water. I'm considering sturdier lugs (if I can find them), probably Tama - we'll see. What type of wood do you guys think this is?
