help identify this cymbal?!

Hey!

I'm not a expert with cymbals and drums…a few days ago i bought a drum kit and there was also a (old?) cymbal with it.

There is a stamp on it as you can see on the pictures and a handwritten name on the bottom.

Is this a vintage cymbal? Where is it from and can i sell it?

You have a very nice handmade, hand-hammered musical instrument there. This is an old Istanbul Mehmet Tamdeger Cymbal. They're excellent! The finest cymbals in the world second only to K Zildjian in my opinion. :)

Istanbul guys will chime in soon and will be able to tell you when this was made and give you an idea of the value of it.

Oh, it's an Agop, just noticing that now. Sweet! They're prized by drummers.

That's not just an Agop. That's a pre-split Istanbul which are more notable. Some vintage cymbal aficionados for those are looking specifiaclly for these.

Maybe someone has an idea how old it is and what means the Name on the bottom?

I'm not shure if i will sell it but also want to know how much i can get for this :-)

It's probably late 70's vintage. They hadn't yet used the new company name "Istanbul" at that time. The name on this one is a Zildjler, which shows it was made before the Zildjian lawsuit forced them to drop that name.

The name under the bell is supposedly of one of the artisans, although I heard it was their secretary who did the signing, but she sat behind a desk and had nothing to do with the actual name that appears there.

As for the value, I couldn't really say, but maybe somebody else here knows better. An eBay search for completed auctions might give you some information if anything like this has sold there recently.

The expected price depends on the diameter and the weight. Greater diameter = higher price, and generally lower weight = higher price. You tell me those and I'll give you an expected range based on some eBay sales I've got recorded in my database.

Many of the rides were somewhat heavy compared to what is in fashion today. I had one of those and wanted to have some idea of value which is how I came to be recording prices. However I didn't record that many, and some of my prices are relatively old (as in pre GFC).

Okay it's 22 inches and it weighs a little more than 2000g. I cant give you the exact weight because the scale can't show more than 2000g ;-)
