This is an old 15" Ludwig field drum that used to be a rod tension snare drum but was plugged up an turned into a tenor drum. Now, years later it has landed in my shop to be turned back into a snare drum. Go figure. It has come full circle. Luckily I could see where the original holes were plugged and was able to drill straight through them.

Before

I stripped everything off and you can see the large patches that were used to back the plugged holes. A bit of overkill but okay.

Next I sanded the bearing edges by hand to smooth them out and took the bottom head and put it on the batter side and got rid of the[B] batter head which was a Remo Emperor with about 5 of the old Zero Rings duct taped to it to muffle the drum. The guide pegs for the snare adjuster have been added here. A new 15" hazy snare side head was put on the bottom of the drum as well.

New gut snares were added to the drum as well

And here you can see the finished drum with new ears and the snare adjuster I salvaged from another shell that I have other plans for.

One more project for now. I bought this drum from an antique dealer who thought it was a drum that had been converted to a lamp. After getting it apart it apears it may have been a l amp to start with and was never a playable drum. DOH! However, I still intend on make it a playable drum so this should be an interesting project to say the least. This is a picture of the "drum" before pulling it apart.

I had to pull out several nails to remove the wood circles that were placed in the top and bottom of the drum and remove the hoops. The hoops were two different thicknesses, one be about a 1/4" thick and the other about 1/8". The paint didn't match up and the design stopped where the hoops would have been covering the top of the shell.

The inside of the shell looks like it is definitely aged wood and there are reinforcement rings there that are falling apart. Note in the pictures that there are holes in the shell and not just the counter hoops.

One clean shot of the painting

Here's a few more in the works.

I wish I could find the picture I took from when I first got this drum. The entire drum was red like you see in spots and I have put countless hours into this with a dozen different paint removers and still the paint won't budge. I had to get hard core on this with the wire wheel on a drill and it was still putting up a hell of a fight. I think someone hand brushed on enamel and then backed it. It looked real bad, and not in a good way. It is a 7" x 14" steel shell drum with a single tension set up and a heater mount so I am guessing 20's - 30's for the date. I thought it was a Ludwig & Ludwig at first but the flat bearing edges and big chunky hoops don't make sense and one of my customers thinks it might be a home made snare. I pretty sure the paint wasn't original to the drum.

Here is one of the hoops

The question is, "what I am going to do with it once I get it clean?"

Considering I have about $125.00 into the drum without counting the paint strippers and over 14 hours of trying to remove old paint, I think this one is going turn into a "labor of love" or just me being stubborn and needing to finish what i started. Not sure what I am going to do with it yet.

Last one of this drum for now

This seems to be a running theme today, Here is another drum that I am stripping down and have no idea what the end result is going to be. Several friends have approached me about making a couple of drums up that would appeal to the Renaissance Faire crowds and make up a few drums with fantasy themes. I have balked on this for a little while but finally have a few ideas for at least 4 drums. Still not sure what the design on this one is going to be but we'll see.

It started off as a 15" x 12" Ludwig & Ludwig marching drum from 1917 that used to have the "US" shield on it but was mostly worn off.

First stripping, needs to be cleaned up

I originally thought this was going to be a mahogany shell but it looks like it was stained maple underneath. Mice grain.

I tongue oiled the shell to bring out the wood grain a little bit and make it pop.

This is a 28" x 10" Slingerland bass drum that I got as part of a payment for another job. The hardware is all there but has been removed so it isn't pictured. Outer ply of maple and inner ply of mahogany but it looks like there was some minor water damage and cracks throughout the shell.

Numerous cracks like these are all over the shell so I will need to repair them before I refinish the drum.

Water marks and more visible cracks.

Lastly, a shot of the inside of the shell.

I am not sure what I am going to do with this drum yet exactly but It may end up being a little crazy and over the top because this is going to be my future sign at drum shows. I have a few ideas but nothing firm yet. I may even be open to some suggestions on this one.

One more to put on the table for projects in the works. This is in the very beginning stages but if it works out, this will be a regular production item for my shop. I have had a few conversations with people over the past few months about making some drums that would appeal to a Renaissance Faire crowd. My first thoughts were somewhere between fantasy/medieval and just totally over the top. You'll have to check backk to see how things progress but the pictures below are the first test runs of the finish that I am planning on doing over the entire drum. I am going to offer the drums in Red - Black fade or Green - Black fade to start. Think dragon skin.

Matt wish I knew about that metal drum when you were at the shop. I would have given you a solvent to try that more than likely would have stripped that red paint off the metal shell. EASY~! I wouldn't try it on wood or wraps but metal heck yes. If you ever have that situation again let me know.

Glenn.

I may still take you up on that. Even with the wire brush on the drill the paint/enamel is still putting up one hell of a fight. Is a good sounding drum when it's together but I have so much time into that drum that no matter what price I sell it for it will be a loss.
