Really nice work. Great that you're bringing these back to life.

This drum came in for a repair and restoration and needed a bit of work to get it back to playable condition. The bottom head was busted and so was the bottom hoop. The customer wanted the drum restored to playable condition to remember their father who had passed. The drum is 18" in diameter and 22" deep not including the depth of the hoops.

While the drum was apart I put my own label inside listing everything to be done. On rope tension marching drums it is common to find lots of labels and writing on the inside of the shell indicated when it was worked on and by whom. I am always fascinated by this because it gives the drum a history or timeline and the drum takes on a character of it's own. My label shows the date all work was completed and the drum reassembled and will show all the work that I did. For the record, the leather ears were reconditioned because they had dried a bit, there was a new 18" 3mm. snare side calfskin head, reinforcement hoops glued and sanded, new hoop made for the snare side.

I started with a blank 12 ply 1.75" wide bass drum hoop.

Then taped it to the old hoop to match up the holes and mark it for drilling. I also cut new snare beds into the hoop and put it on the router table to do a round over on the hoop so there were no sharp edges rubbing against the rope. You can see in this picture in the back where the old hoop split.

I color matched the paint after drilling was complete and and all other work was done and reassembled. The drum and painting are beautiful and sound good when they are back to together.

Very cool project Matt. Wow, 18x20 did you say? That is a huge snare drum man. The labels from previous drum shops inside the shell are way cool, good stuff! And nice match on the paint!

Thank you!

Matt - is that the carry mounted on the shell instead of on the hoop?

Wow 18" x 22"!! Very cool. If I read the inside right the first owner was 1966? And the painting in 1975 while the 2nd owner had it? The timeline inside is almost as cool as the drum itself. As always great work Matt. The wood grain on the one above that wow it really pops!! I like the hand painted hoops too. Nice touch.

Glenn.

es, occasionally I do come across a few drums with carry hooks mounted to the shell.

The drum with the Celtic knots is a Cooperman drum. I just repainted the hoops and did the knot work on it, the grain looked killer before I touched it. It is quarter sawn maple.
