Premier rack tom: which series?

Hello,

in a convolute of several drums I found this rack tom of Premier and I wonder,

which series it is and what it is still worth today?

- It has 5 lugs (!) only per hoop.

- On the left side and on the right of the tom holder there is each one badge of Premier (with two different numbers: 001338 and 001452). I am NOT kidding ...!

- The finish is a black plastic wrap.

- Inside of the drum it is painted black.

- The size: 11" (height) x 12" (diameter).

- I guess that still the original heads are on. The resonant head shows 'Premier CL HEAD'. On the batter side no name is legible.

- The wing screw of the tom holder is on one side 'open': a hexagonal screw nut can be seen from outside.

Any ideas from which year/ series it comes? What is a reasonable price proposal if I would sell it (just some chrome pitting on one hoop and several scratches on the finish?

I'd guess it's a 1990's APK or XPK. It has the more modern Premier logo (before they went BACK to the script-style on later in the 90's) on the factory head shown. I had a rosewood drum from the mid 90's with exactly the same one-piece nut-boxes. I'd say between 1993-96? The five lug arangement is not uncommon here because it's a small diameter drum.

In itself, it's not worth a great deal BUT those early serials may put a different complexion on it.

This shows a picture of one similar to yours. I own a kit that I was told was a late 80's APK kit that also has the single (high tension) lugs...

If your's have the serial numbers on the badges I would place a guess and say your tom may be a Projector or Soundwave from the late 70's...

APK/XPK switched over to the long lugs in '89 (I think) and then switched to separate lugs mid 90s. I have an APK/XPK flyer from '89 which has the new style drums with the long lugs.

Matter of fact, I have 12/13/22 APK from the same time period that look exactly the same as your drum. My 12" the previous owner stripped, so the badges are gone, but now you've got me curious about the 13" and the serial numbers.

For your questions, I'm certain you have an APK tom from '89-'94ish. It's not worth much and I can say this pretty definitely because I've been watching eBay auctions to either find a floor tom to complete my set or sell 'em. Floor toms seem to get a premium while rack toms don't go for much at all. Wish I had better news for both of us!

I have all Premiers catalogs from the 50's through the 90's. I based my guess on the serial numbers on the badges. After looking closer at the badges it appears they are the later version where the word Premier does not go through the red P. I am a little confused now...Hmmmm

Also it looks like yours has the reinforcement rings. The APK and XPK did not. I have an 89 APK kit and my badges do not have serial numbers and my shells are not black inside and Premier crosses the P on my badges...

1990 model has the later style badges like yours (but I thought the serial numbers were only from the 70's-early 80's?) The catalog also shows the 12"x 11" as available with the APK/XPK...

No - mine has no reinforcement rings. Sorry for my poor pic quality!

I would like draw your attention to the TWO badges with the different

numbers on this one drum again ... I guess that's mysteriously???

Attached please find a close-up pic of one of it.

Also: maybe this drum is an 'export version' (I come from Germany)???

Any concrete price ideas how to sell it? Between EUR 20 to 50 perhaps?

Jbeat, never seen an APX/XPK 12" with long lugs and more than 5 of them. That's really strange. Also my kit and the flyer I have, which I haven't seen scans of online, have the older style tom holder and the kit you have up there has the newer Rok-Lock (I think that's what they called it) one. It's just an APK/XPK flyer I grabbed in late 89 or early 90 when I was shopping for a kit. (Ended up with a Ludwig Rocker. Heh.) I like your tom holder better. I think it was first offered on the XPK kits as an upgrade from the APK but then they both got it. My friend who had an XPK around this time had that holder and his kit was a lacquered XPK.

I get the impression nailing down Premier dates and series is far from an exact science, but I'm pretty sure your kit is more recent than '89. I think that style of badge came into existance '93-ish? The stuff from the '89 flyer definitely has the badge posted above this post.
