Sky blue pearl wrap restoration

From samsdrum

Dude, you are obsessing over the wrap fade. They look cool as is so I'd just get 'em back together and start enjoying that great vintage Luddy sound. They're never going to be collector grade and if you REALLY wanted the original color back I'm afraid it would involve chemicals, etc. and then you never know what the outcome might be. Could be better or could be worse. There is a guy on another forum that unyellowed a WMP kit with great success. Then the wrap kind of looked cloudy so he had to buff it with some wax I think. Anyhow, I was wondering if it would work for SBP? But if I effed it up I would be extremely ****ed that I just didn't leave well enough alone. Mine are almost ready to go. My hoops need repainting and I need to replace a few drum heads and I'm in businesss.

You are right! I needed this kick in the arse! I dont want to use chemicals and try to re gloss it... Im just gonna work with it and make it happen and JAM

Masked off the inlays and sanded the hoops down then spray painted the hoops with rustolium satin black

I happened to see this thread randomly and I happened to be dealing with a slingerland kit with the same wrap and issue. This probably sounds like a scary thing and I wouldn't advise everyone to try it...however if your care full and patient, you can resurrect some rough stuff. Wet sanding with automotive sandpaper in 600 grit to start and finish with 1500 or a 2000. Then an electric buffer with a mid cut 3m automotive polish. THE POLISH REQUIRES SOME UNDERSTANDING IN USAGE and experiance helps. Understanding rotation and how to move it makes the difference. But the results are fantastic. If you want a god walk through, let me know and I can help you. It's labor intensive but worth every second. I'll see if I can get a couple of pics up to show you the difference. But remember, Sky blue pearl was hardly blue to begin with...

Jordan,

I too recently purchased a 67 SBP kit in 13,16,22 that I'm cleaning up and putting back together.Yours looks great! Don't sweat the aged look. It looks cool like that.Keep up the good work, you'll have something to be proud of when people ask you about them!

I picked up a set of SBP's that were just chalky and faded looking. Used Mequiar's PlastX and an auto buffer. Worked great... Before and after -
