Need to identify and find part for old Japan kit

Loading...

From Patriot54

Thanks for the info guys - I'll post some more pictures on Thursday. The kit seems in decent condition other than a little rust and corrosion, a missing snare and bass drum hoop and the broken tom arm. I think it's worth putting some time into as a second kit for my friend.btw, What's a re-ring? I'm just a bass player - lol

I do have the correct tom arm holder..and maybe the right hoop..(20" or 22")???

However I'm just over the border.(Toronto/Canada)..shipping bass drum hoops are expensive ....

Try to find the large items nearby (same state), if yr in a jam on the tom arm...email me at kfabian1970@gmail.com

I'm in Massachusetts. ChristianB said he probably has the tom arm assembly for this kit, but I will measure the specs of the drums anyway and post them here by the end of the week.

I don't think these drums have re-rings but I will post some more detailed pics. All I know so far is that the wood grain runs vertically from hoop to hoop, which I read is done on cheaper drums. It's a somewhat darker mahogany-type wood color (possibly luan?)

edit: I shouldn't have said I'm just a bassist - I also play congas/bongos and percussion in my other group but can't play a drumset to save my life. ;)

From Cyllocke

... The 1965 page seems to feature the same lugs and consolette, though not the same bracket - at least, to my eyes. ...

Your eyes tell you wrong ...

Rail consolette and bracket are similar - but not equal. Slight differences really make the disagreement!

From Cyllocke

... Is it possible then that both companies shared hardware designs at times??

Yes, that's possible - but also at that time the deviations were fact and happened and are more important.

It is agreed now (in this forum), that differences tell us whether a drum was made by one (or another) manufacturer only.

It doesn't really matter which manufacturer that was, the tom holders are pretty interchangeable among that style of mounting system. I have that tom holder if you need it. If your drummer intends to use the kit as a player's kit, as opposed to a collector kit, I'd strongly recommend dumping that mounting system altogether anyway.

With that mounting system I guarantee he is losing at least 5-7 seconds of resonance. That mount is one of the biggest reasons people complain about the sound of old MIJs. Swap it out for an isolation system and you will rock back on your heels when you hear the difference.

The drums are Hoshino. Surprised no one's mentioned it yet. Far from the best of the MIJ offerings, and with the common, blue sparkle/glitter wrap, I'd not worry too much about preserving anything here myself. If your using two rack toms, lose the consolette. That set up does not allow for a good dual tom arrangement, and is a bugger to deal with. Either that, or use just one rack tom.:2Cents:

Consider a 4-piece arrangement with the tom on a snare stand. My MIJ tom is on a snare stand and it resonates for too long if not tightened up a bit tuning-wise.

I know I'd want to rig a cowbell and splash cymbal or woodblock on those existing tom mounts. Looks like the round interlocking parts unscrew from the armatures, leaving holes for mounting uprights...

Thanks for all the info. I'll leave it up to my drummer about the arrangement but I think he wants to keep the consolette just to have something different and old school. If I can get him a less rusty one just like it for a few bucks, that would be fine. Plus he already has a main kit and an old backup kit with the isolation tom mounts. The most we'll do with this one is replace the broken/missing parts and clean off the rusty screws and lugs. Is CLR good to use on these kind of drum parts?

btw, the specs are: 16x22" bass, 16.5" floor tom, 12.5" & 13.5" toms (I measured the diameters with the head rings on)

I think it´s Luxor. I had the same one and also the "broken" holder.

You can repair it in 2 ways: weld or braze it. That fits powerfull.

Or you make o short split at the end of the bolt (where plate holds it) and hammer it.

I tried both ways and the first one is the best.
