Yes - I am supposed to be one of the MIJ experts on here - but I am embarassed that I do not recall. My gut feelingis that it was made by Pearl. I can confirm that since it has the thin shell with the re-rings - it is 1967 or earlier.

There has been a bit of confusion on the Tempo vs. Tempro - but there ARE some MIJ stencil experts on here that have a clear understanding of their origin - only a matter of time before they chime in.

Nice drum there! I think since you have the more complex tone control, the stick-saver hoops, and ample washers - that it can be considered on of the nicer stencil models.

Yes Indeed, I have one in my shop. Same badge. I've cannibalized it for parts, but I may still have the badge somewhere.

I have owned a Tempo kit in mint condition for several years (blue sparkle). It has a different badge though: "World's Supreme Quality, Made in Japan". That points to Star. The hardware is identical to my set of Supremes which is definitely Star. There has indeed been some lengthy discussion about the manufacturer. I believe that Star made Tempos and that Pearl made Tempros. I think that Ralf will agree. Hope this helps a bit.

Sorry, Brian, but the snare strainer construction was never made by Star (also the badge is totally different from the Star made 'Tempo' badge).

Yep, you're right, Ralf! I should have looked at the strainer before I replied! I still find it interesting that both Star and Pearl could manufacture drums by the same name. Thanks, Ralf!

Yes - research will indicate, seen and discussed here on the forum before, that some stencil kits were manufactured by both Pearl and Star. Sometimes one drum will have parts of each - at least that is what it appears as - and we all enjoy the speculation that follows! Prime example is the shell on the Star (and indeed the lugs) chrome snares (Majestic for example) that is seemingly identical to the Pearl chrome shell of that time. I am convinced that some US retailers used both Star and Pearl together for some of their kits.

I think I have to think over the matter with Majestic once again. Your pic. doesn't show Star-like lugs and this metal shell looks slightly different to my Star metal shells as well ...

I'll investigate in this soon.

Edit: it's curious: many 'Majestic De Luxe' drum pics on this forum indicate 'Made by Star'. No doubts.

But the lugs above? I'm not sure, as they are not the common Star style. Do you have a pic of the strainer as well?

Anyone have any idea what this Tempo is worth? It's probably headed for eBay. I paid over $100 for it. Sounds like I paid too much.

I would say that yes, you paid too much for that snare. At the same time, sometimes people pay more than usual based on availability at that moment and that it perhaps is a great match for their kit. Generally speaking these MIJ snares are not worth 100, but sometimes people give more than typical prices.

I would say these snares are generally worth between 40 and 80. Everything is subject to any one person's obsession over something - as most of us here can testify to.

If I were you and you had a use for it (a kit that it matched for example) I would keep it, as you are sure to lose money if you try to sell it. If you are not satisfied with how it sounds, then perhaps it needs edgework or it needs new heads and a good tuning.
