I think stain would make that veneer pop

Jeff those are sweet!! I really like them. The natural look is nice so if you stain them maybe something very light in shade? The grain pops nicely.

Dynamic or conservative is the question... We know they will look great either way... man you were quick with the veneering...

Going to be serious cool whatever you do. What plating is on the hardware? With nickle I like a soft natural finish. Chrome pops nice against a darker gloss.

Longjohn, I had most of the veneer ripped and cut to length. It took roughly six hours to apply the veneer on the five shells, oh and to make the snare beds. used a brush on adhesive this time instead of the aresol spray cans. I am happy with the way it came out.

A nice gloss coat will make them shine… ;)

And yes, we will talk before Chicago...

I watched a video about John Bohnams drums and how they were set up. My kit is not a Bonham sized set but its close. So I was considering using the same heads that he did. Seems he used Remo Emperor coated,s on batter side, Ambassador coated on the reso sides. I figure if thats what John Bonham used it must be a good combo. What do you guys think?

By the way, I sprayed some clear on the veneer scrap today and I will probably go that way. There is a lot of colors in this wood, gee it is beautiful!

Jeff -- On my 3 ply Slingerland 13/16/18/26 (Bonham-ish) I like coated Emperors on the batter side of the floor toms and bass. On the 13, a coated Vintage A. Clear A's on all the tom resos, and a coated A on the bass reso. Hope that helps...

Six hours. Had the pieces cut and ready, all I had to do was smear glue on them and wrap, press down with a veneer scraper, sand the edges and wala, done. The snare bed took about 30 mins of that time, I cut a 35.25" long stick to make and template with using the w2+4h2/8h formula to make a 1/8" arc 6" long. Then it was simply trace to drum edge then grind down with Festool sander.

All of the shells had been sanded, unwanted hole's filled in and ready to go before Sunday.

Notice the interiors, I sanded off the black paint that was in the bass and 18" floor tom. The 16" still has the original white paint so I left it alone. I took Tom and Mikes advice and choose not to paint them again. The 16" is the one that I removed the entire first ply from a few weeks ago, lol!
