Hey all,
I have an older set that I will be refinishing soon. It's a Mapex Mars Pro and is Maple/Mahogany/Maple plies. I want to strip of the old dark purple lacquer finish and redo them in a turquoise strata finish which has a black base coat.
What is the best thing to use to strip off the old lacquer finish?
Also, do I necessarily need to strip it all the way to wood?
Since the base coat of the new finish is black, can't I just leave the old purple paint (or whatever it is) on the drum and just lightly sand and paint over it? Or would that be too much and choke the drum resonance?
From what I understand (which isn't much) the resonance is based on the inside of the drum regardless of what is on the outside, basically.
I hope this all makes sense.
