A Lurkers's first restoration

So after lurking on this forum a few months I've started to tackle my first restoration job. A little background on me. As a player I've been at it for almost 30 years. First set was a late 60s Mod Orange that I sold to friend so I could get a Tama Rockstar. I know, I've been kicking myself for 20 years for that one.

I spent 8 years working in a cabinet shop so my woodworking and wood finishing schools are pretty good. Given the fact that I have all the basic wood skills necessary to successfully complete a project like this. Naturally, I picked a plastic drumset for my first attempt:)

After keeping an eye on craigslist for the right deal I finally found something this weekend. I picked up a complete 76 blue Vistalite with hardware, cymbals and an extra snare for a steal. Sizes are 24 Kick 13,14 rack, 16FT and a 5X14 Vista snare. The pies are all Zildjians, 20" ride two 16" crashes. Hi Hats are Zilco. At this point I've been so jazzed about the drums that I really haven't looked at the cymbals to see what I have. It almost makes up for the Mods I let go 25 years ago.

The shells are in really good shape. Actually better than I thought when I went to look at them. There's dings, but with the exception of a few they should all come out. The drum hardware OTOH needs some work. The chrome has some pitting and rust but I have been able to get it to shine. There is hope. The stands are a different story. they are really rusty, I'm going to at them with some simichrome and see what happens. The spurlock is in really rough shape. I'm not sure if its salvageable

I'll keep adding shots as I make progress.

Welcome to the forum. Blue Vistalites are beautiful drums. I've got a set that I bought used in 1980 and gigged them hard for about 25 years. Still in real good shape. Yours should clean up real nice and you will enjoy them alot. Congratulations on your drum set.

bizz!

Nice to have you here and WELCOME! That said though... we request that you put up pics as ATTACHMENTS and not imbedded within the text box. Imbedding your pics sucks up bandwith and takes up a LOT of room, in many cases blowing the entire thread out of proportion. Plus, we like to archive pics of all the members drums, and that can only happen if the pics are put up as ATTACHMENTS. We THANK YOU for your understanding! ENJOY your stay!

Bizz,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing pictures. Very nice Vistalites, especially since you got the hardware, cymbals, and bass drum blanket thrown into the deal. Looks like your woodworking skills won't be tested with this kit, but keep us informed on any of your restorations and projects.

Good score. That hi hat stand is definitely save able. Welcome to the forum. Can't wait to see more pics of your progress. I have yet to come across a clear set I could grab for a great score. Hopefully one day.
