Besides the Simichrome I have had great results using CLR on hardware. I have also used Wink where needed but I think CLR and the simichrome will get your hardware sorted.

OK I've got a question. So I plan on refinishing these hoops, I may even start on them this week. They're in pretty decent shape other than worn paint and a beat up inlay that needs to be replaced. My question for you guys is, after I get them all sanded up what should I use to prime and paint them with?? I've got some primer left over from when I built my kitchen cabinets. I can't remember exactly what kind it is, but the type of wood I used it on was poplar. I assume that will work?? Also does anybody what kind of finish the original hoops had?? Was it flat, gloss, semi gloss??? or where they coated with polyurethane?

So finished up the hoops today and they didn't turn out too bad. I found a couple replacement claws and T rods on ebay to replace the ones that are missing. They should be here sometime this week so I'll be getting it put back together soon. I do have to do something about these floor tom legs though, they are not cleaning up for me.

Looking good! Your hoops came out nice. I did the same thing yesterday, scraped off the old paint, sanded and painted them with black lacquer.

Bizz - get the rusty, bare spots down to clean metal, then try Nev-R-Dul! That stuff will make a t-u-r-d shine! :D

I was going to replace the inlay but decided to hold off for at least awhile. I got this sparkle looking quit a bit better and i like the idea of it being original. I'll probably replace it if I sell the kit, or park it for show. One of the inlays has about 3/4 of an inch broke off at the end. And the other one looks like it has a cigarette burn. Both are easily hidden. So for now it's good enough for me since I plan on gigging with this kit frequently.

What's the best way to get it down to bare metal without damaging the chrome that's still good?? Aluminum foil is not doing the trick. Do I need to break the no steel wool rule?

Blair - Nev-R-Dul is just cotton wadding with a chemical added! You must have rubbed the bejezus out of those parts.

Bizz - Yes, for legs in that rough a shape, some 00-00 (dbl.O) steel wool used only where the chrome has flaked and rusted, it will be fine. I would never use it on lugs, or other hardware, but to get those floor tom legs clean, I'd use it. The Nev-R-Dul will put an incredible shine on them that will hide the missing chrome well enough.

"Purists" will freak out when they read this, but if it works on those flakey legs, use it. All you want to see is bare metal... no rust. Nev-R-Dul will do the rest. They're old, beat up, tom legs, not fine Italian candelabra's.
