1965 Rogers BR Celebrity's/Drivers Seat

Loading...

I know, I know! I have put these up in the past.. but! .. I literally just found this shot/view on a disc of pics that I thought had something else I was looking for. So much for that, but...

... the hopefully interesting thing here is, a completely different view/perspective of my '65 Rogers Buddy Rich Celebrity's. Rogers sets in this configuration are relatively "rare" to see/find, especially so as these are '65's. There are a LOT of NEW members here now.. ( WELCOME! ) .. so I thought I might take the liberty of putting these up. Here are the particulars:

14X24

9X13

16X16

16X16

5X14 wood/WMP Dynasonic

Complete/correct hardware

This shot was taken just prior to the curtain opening at a venue I was playing with the Frank Sinatra Show. What's neat I thought was the "driver's seat" view. Let me immediately address the Evans EMAD coated on the bass drum:

I play other gigs in addition to the Sinatra Show, thus I need the bass drum to be able to cover different styles, yet sound correct for all. This head set up covers that! Toms are ALL Remo Ambassador Vintage A's, and the Dynasonic is also a Remo Ambassador Vintage A. Lastly, as I'm sure someone is going to think/mention it:

Stick bag hanging on the floor tom: Indeed. Most probably a "slight" amount of "tone/resonance" robbing, but... negligible when part of a truly vintage set-up such as this. Hopefully you will ENJOY!!

Tommy - I love playing a 1-up, 2-down set-up, but that second floor tom never seems to find a sweet-spot position-wise in the set-up. When I play the 2-down set-up I've learned to -turn from the waist- when doing a run involving the second floor. I believe Papa Jo Jones had it right! He placed the second floor tom on his left, just under the hats. Instead of having to turn his entire torso to reach a second floor tom on the right, it becomes a 'twist of the wrist' (side to side wrist motion,) to strike either floor tom with hands still close to the snare. I'm not even going to mention the amazing cross-over stuff he did with that set-up!

I have a 13" calf head Pandiero in that position (right behind the hats on my left,) which produces an 'almost' bass drum sound (with jingles,) so I don't miss the added bottom-end from having the 2nd floor tom on the right. But, it always bothered me to make that big turn to reach it. Papa Jo was on to something with the proper (more ergonomic) way to have a 2-down set-up. One on each side!

I drool every time I see your working kit. It's just a spectacular/classic set of drums.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

John!

Yes indeed! I am a BIG fan of Papa Joe Jones, as was Buddy! I have seen him utilize that 2nd floor tom on the left side in filmed performances and LIVE too! Certainly works for him, and anyone else that goes that route, such as yourself! For me, well... I have been playing this particular set up for so long that I have to tell you... that back floor tom IS a flick of the wrist for me, unless the drum is being played specifically or at the tail end of a GIANT fill. I have to agree here though:

Whereas Buddy had his back 16X16 right in line/straight with one behind the other.. ( which is near IMPOSSIBLE to play with any comfort or without contortion ) .. my 2nd 16X16 is behind the 1st, but pushed OUT a bit to the right, making access extremely comfortable/easy. Truth be told, I actually DO play that drum, but nowhere near as much as the 1st floor tom.. and .. I only put my towel on the 2nd 16X16 specifically for the pics at this gig! So many guys have busted my man berries about "hey, you gotta put a towel on that back floor tom... it's what Buddy did" ... so I did. Go figure that this gig would have a photographer who ended up taking a BUNCH of shots of the band AND the drums! I guess it was indeed a photo opp.

THANKS for your comments John!... and glad you liked 'em too! I think that if I were to sell off most all my other drums/hardware.. ( even though I like them all ) .. this set of Rogers are what I would keep!

Tommy, this is my normal set up, as you do ,I set my 18" floor tom at an angle also, A big mistake a lot of drummers make with this setup is sit to close forward with two floor toms you have to sit a bit further back, which I have always played that way anyway

Right on the money here! For a really good view of this practice, look no further than Steve Smith! Here's a "driver's seat" view of his Sonor's, and have a look at just how FAR that 2nd floor tom is pushed out. It "looks" like it isn't reachable... but the complete opposite is true! His makes my personal placement look like they're almost in line!
