Premier beaded metal snare

Loading...

Hello all. This is my first post.

I have a Premier metal snare that I got along with a '68 Slingerland set. I kinda thought it was a throw away (not knowing the Premier brand) but reheaded it last night and was surprised how nice it sounded. The shell is non-magnetic as are the casings and the strainer handle. It has a raised bead around the perimeter and 8 lugs. I didn't notice if the bearing had exposed brass when I changed out the head. So, looking around the net, it really looks like a 21 except for the 10 lugs.

Any ideas what I have?

The attached picture looks exactly like mine. I can take some pix and post mine if needed.

Thats cool you got that...

Premier drums our fantastic (in my opinion)

My favorite snare drum I own is a Premier.

I don't know a ton about premier models like some guys on here do.

I know they did put out some metal snare's in the 60's.. Although the one in your pic looks more like a 2000, but I could be totally off on that.

(edit) I didn't notice the rounded part in the middle. It looks almost like an older dominion snare (edit)

someone who is more knowledgeable should chime in here

This may help you

This a great snare drum you have hang on to it... my premier is a wooden shell, but I have a friend that has a metal one. Both have fantastic rim shot... When I would play drums places like a year or two back drummers always loved my snare and wanted to know what it was.

congrats again on the find :)

Shalom,

Matthias

It does look like the 2000 but doesn't have the crossmember inside. I have seen some Beverly COB snares that look a lot like this one. I believe premier bought Beverly in the 60's so maybe this is an early Premier 21 prototype using a Beverly shell.

Any other Premier/Beverly experts have an opinion? Bowing

Isn't it a Hi-Fi snare?

No. It's a latterday Beverley Cosmic 21 in its 1970s USA market incarnation, the kit snare from the Premier Powerhouse 6000/6500 drums of the mid and late 70s.

Look it up.Eye Ball

Seamless aluminum, 8-lug Brit Supra, a cracker.

You can google the story, but Premier President Della Porta bought Beverley and had Premier continue their manufacture awhile before dissolving it. The 6000/6500 line used up old Prem components like 3 ply African mahogany shells, push-button BD spurs, 3/8" FT legs/brackets and of course the Beverley lugs and Cosmic snare shell. In the US they were badged Premier and priced modestly in 22/12/13/16 and 22/13/14/16 configs.

You'd have a hard time finding better sounding pre-80 Premiers.

Wow, thanks for the info Floyd!

Was the Cosmic 21 an aluminum or COB shell? I am pretty sure mine is COB because of the weight. I have a couple aluminum snares and tis one is WAY heavier.

I was looking at the 75/76 catalog and it looks like the 10-lug snares of that era. It is a combo between the 2000 with 8 lugs and the 35 with 10 lugs.

Also unusual is the badge which is way smaller that the ones in the catalog. Is there anything to that? do I have a weird 35 with 8 lugs and a small badge?

Looks indeed a lot like the Beverley Cosmic 21 I used to have.

Mine was aluminum 10-lugs,... super sound !!!

Not sure about the badge. I only saw those on early 60's 4" snares and on premier drum cases.

Boy yea, it sure does look like that Beverley! What year was that from?

Maybe what Floyd said, that Premier used up all the extra shells and hardware and made up some Frankensnare's, is true. They may have even used up some old smaller badges since the new larger ones didn't seem to fit too well. Lame

That line (I owned a set) was absolutely a parts-clearer and as such, I guess it's possible that some beaded COB shells made their way into that model snare. It's unlikely though because they weren't phasing out COB shells., This aluminum ex-cosmic shell is from the 1930s and was at the end of the line by then.

I have never seen this configuration catalogued other than as the kit snare for 6000/6500. The regular Premier snare line-up catalogues do not list it, although you can see all the components there a la carte. The same configuration probably did exist in the Beverly line though. Remember, these are leftover Beverley, not Premier. (Confusing because Premier OEM'd Beverley, but this distinction helps follow the plot.)

I had thought mine COB too and finally scraped inside a lug hole enough to tell - gray shavings = aluminum. The other giveaway is pitting. If it has Supra acne you know it's not brass.

My guess on the badges is that the shells were already punched with the small airholes. Maybe a Big Red P badge wouldn't fit in the panel or maybe they just didn't want to enlarge the holes. At any rate, those little red P badges must've been handy at the time. Seems like something you'd see on a snare case or the like.
