The shells are fantastic. They last a lifetime, and will always sound great, but the wraps can go. These are super easy to wrap. The wrap is glued only at the seam. Mine have been through two re-wraps and are now painted in gold top lacquer, if painting, you'll have to fill in the thousands of pinholes.

The Vari-set hardware as seen here was the hardware that took over for the hex rod hardware of the earlier 70's. The ratchet style arms (if I am understanding you correctly) only showed up on their cheaper drums. My W/F kit had all the same hardware and badges as this kit but came with the hex rod hardware. After replacing the mount on my 14" for a third time due to cheap pot metal construction, I replaced mine with the Vari-Set hardware. To heck with the extra holes, I just needed the gear to work!Nice score Gary.

Yes those HEX rods would crack around the ball joint as I recall.

This is one is a nice clean kit.. plenty of volume from those too..

Cheers

In the 1978 catalog, the only whites offered were called "pure white" and "white marine pearl." As you well know, you don't have WMP.

They did offer a wrap called "silver silk," which to me was kinda an off-white. However, my "best guess" from the pictures is that you have "pure white," but it is a little faded. Best way to tell would be to pull a lug off and check the color under it...

Doing a quick search I do recall that my W/F kit was a Big Beat kit from the 1975 catalogue in Silver Satin. I am pretty sure that the Vari-Set hardware came out shortly there-after.

Gary, your set is pure white.

Fish, that set was gorgeous. I always though the hex hardware looked better, but man I got tired of replacing the tom mounts. The spurs on that kit did not look stock though.

what are the chances of finding a matching snare????? I'm probably better off with another snare anyway.

IMO, slim and none. I'm not sure they produced anything but their COS and COB SDs during the time-frame that your set was manufactured...

I agree with Bill on this. Some of those snares, particularly the Jupiter were pretty nice. I loaned mine to a friend who then had his entire gear trailer stolen so that is what happened to mine.

Yup, you're right, they're not stock. The originals had already been replaced, and the replacements broken when I got the kit. These are some generic spurs I had kicking around.

The kit, as found did not include a snare. I just happened to have a Pearl COS snare shell with the matching badge in my parts pile, so I built it out. The snare is not impressive, but the badge matches!

Long story short; the friends son is eleven years old. He loves the kit, is taking lessons, and doing quite well. He got them last July, for his birthday.

The way my fractured mind works, I'm thinking that if he sticks with drums, and advances in the craft and art, that kit will be quite the chick magnet.

The kit ain't a Maserati, but they are equal in 'cool' as a vintage Mustang. So, there you go... chick magnet. Cool1

Anyway, the moral of my tale is, hang onto the kit, Mr. slingerland. They sound incredible, and look even better!
