What to do, COB 14x5 Jupiter

Loading...

So my friend and lead singer shows up for practice on monday with "this old snare drum" he kept from a previous band mate whose relationship turned sour.

Its grungy, clapped out heads, slightly dented shell, missing muffler...but hey..its not magnetic.

So today I researched and discovered its a 14x5 COB Jupiter (correction, NOT a Jupiter).

I just hammered out the dent where it had been dropped and cleaned the brass shell and steel hoops up. So far its quite a looker.

Not perfect but solid players grade. Other then the muffler its 100% complete.

So, do I keep it...help him sell it...what say you VDF?

I think that depends on how you like it?

It won´t bring him that much, so if you like it, keep it.

These Pearl brass snares are loved by some - Stewart Copeland used one while playing in Police.

When you call it Jupiter, I suppose it has the parallel strainer - which makes new wires quite expensive, only PureSound makes them (if they still do?)

Personally, I like the B4514 better, as it has a standard strainer, making choice of wires much better and cheaper. And eventually I decided I didn´t like it anyway, as it is a very LOUD snare....some people like that, I like the drier sound of an aluminium snare better.

So - how do you like it?

It is a standard strainer not the parallel unit, is it not a Jupiter? Maybe a COB rock snare instead?

Bill, Let me finish cleaning it up and play it a touch. If neither of us care for it I will reach out to you.

Shawn, if it's got the standard strainer it's not a Jupiter. The Jupiters were Pearl's answer to Ludwig's Supersensitive model. I've owned a 6.5x14 one for years. What you probably have is what Jon mentioned: what they called a B4514. Nice drum though; 10 lugs and well built -- just not a Jupiter.

For what it's worth, in the last year I've sold 2 Pearl SDs. I got almost $300 out of a mint-condition late 70s Pearl Jupiter. I also sold a B4514 on eBay (in 9-out-of-10 condition) for about $80. That one sounded very much like a Ludwig Supra, but will NEVER bring as much!

Speaking of Supras... you still got the one I traded to you?

Next question - if it has die-cast hoops, they were called B4514DC.

Top model - as I say, I like them better than the Jupiters, as Jupiters need special wires.

You should post a pic!

My - recently sold - specimen of a B4514DC:

Close to the same snare Jon.

My vent is in a different spot and I have the usual triple flange hoops.
