Mr. Mitchell's one up, two down set up was a British 'thing' in rock drumming back then. Just off the top of my head, I remember Jerry Shirley - Humble Pie, Kenny Jones - Faces (Jones played a number of set ups in different groups: Small Faces, Who). I'm sure there were loads more, but these popped into my head.

Well said. My parents bought me 'Are You Experienced' in '67 when I was 9 years old. I didn't play drums yet, but once I started a few years later, I played to that record a thousand times. A monumental drummer and influence on me.

I had the pleasure of seeing Mitch with "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" in 1967 in Toronto.Rumor had it that Mitch couldn`t play and a session player would fill in.Well... when the band took the stage,i held my breath in anticipation as he was my hero.All of a sudden this little head came out of the back stage curtains as if to say..."i`m here" and crept forward to the kit like an animal waiting to pounce. Mitch stood all of us on our heads trying to figure out what he was doing? He brought in a new style that had never been heard before or since for that matter...

Lucky you. What a great story. When was it that he opened up for the Monkees? I have a good friend that saw that show in Jacksonville. Atlanta wasn't this huge metropolis back then, so they may have skipped us over. Surely I would've gone. My parents were great about taking me to concerts. My Dad took me to see the Beatles when I was 6.

Mitch Mitchell as far as I am concerned was a equal part of that sound of the Experience. His playing was ass kicking rock, fusion jazz rock. Frenetic, exciting, blistering. Davy Jones, who was English, heard the Experience there, and appreciated Hendrix talent, and was responsible for putting "The Experience" on stage in front of thousands. Davy personaly told me he was embarrassed that the people were yelling Davy and the other Monkees names during Hendrix set . I asked him about Hendrix demeanor and he said he was a nice guy. Also, Mitch played "yer Blues" with John Lennon on the Stones "Rockin Roll Circus" film.

Ahhh... the 'Dirty Mac' band. And he screwed up the tempo change coming out of Clapton's lead break! Listen to it. Watch Lennon and Richards faces. Regardless, it's a great lineup, talk about a 'super group'!

I was lucky enough to see Jimi Hendrix twice. Once with the 'Experience' (with Noel Redding) and the next time with Billy Cox on bass. The first time I saw him, Jack (?? last name, bassist with Jefferson Airplane) played bass and Noel Redding switched to rhythm guitar on a song... can't remember if it was 'Red House' or 'Voodoo Child'. Prob the later.
