Hi all ! I'm about to embark on a restore project of my first Star kit. All arrived today (ebay purchase, I think I paid a little too much) and is more intact hardware-wise than I thought via the pictures.
The good:
1)The tom mount is all intact, with the exception of a nut and bolt and washer.
2)There is one spur included, just the steel, no washer and rubber. I can fashion one at our shop with no issue, or purchase a replacement? If anyone know an "off the shelf" spur that would fit please let me know.
3) All rims are there for the toms and bass drum.
4) Only missing one bass drum claw and tension rod.
5) The shells are all in very good shape (except the snare which is not part of the original set). They are all painted gray interiors, and there is only one flaky spot on the floor tom that will glue up with no issue. The luan is a bit rough so that will need to be addressed.
6) The wrap (a red swirl satin) is in mostly very good shape. One minor crack/split on one of the bass drum casings. The kit is filthy but that's no biggie.
7) The cymbal mount on the bass drum is still there, though incomplete.
The bad:
1) There is one casing and tension rod missing on the ride tom.
2) There is one claw and tension rod missing on the bass drum.
3) There are 6 casings missing on the floor tom, as well as tension rods.
4) The aforementioned missing one bass drum spur.
5) The aforementioned cymbal mount on the bass drum is incomplete.
6) Missing the knurled knob and guts for the muffler on the floor tom.
So ... my questions at this point are as follows:
1) If anyone knows of a source for these "924" style lugs/casings I would love to know. Or, if anyone knows of a casing that I could use in their place that would fit the pre-drilled holes on the floor tom I could just use them on the bottom (until I score another drum that has them?).
2) If someone could take a close up picture or pictures of their cymbal mount I'd really appreciate it. I have a machine shop and could have one of our wizards come up with something that might work. Or, if there is a source to replace one that would be ideal (but not likely I presume).
3) If anyone knows if there is a source for bass drum spurs that would be a direct fit for Star drums please let me know. If not, I can have one fashioned here.
4) The drums feel real dry to me. Should the interiors (painted gray) be oiled or waxed or sealed? They are a bit rough and flaky. I have heard that some folk seal them with poly don't know if I want to brighten them up too much. Open to suggestions.
5) Any suggestions for cleaning the wrap safely? It has a swirl texture.
This is going to be a lot of fun and my two kids, the jr. drummers in the house, are looking forward to tackling it with me. I'll attach pictures from before arrival and will update as we go. Special thanks go to Ralf and his most excellent site on Star drums.
