Premier time capsule find

I spent the day on the road earlier this week collecting this early 60s Premier kit. It was owned by the drummer of a band called the Hi Lites who played the local dance halls in the 60s. I bought it off the sax player, the only surviving member, who was able to show me photos of the band in action all those years ago. And sure enough, the odd floor tom was there right from the beginning. My guess is the kit was the '52' outfit that had no FT and a FT was added. Being on the other side of the world the choice was probably between waiting half a lifetime for a BDP FT from England or going with whatever was available.

The snare is a 10 lug HiFi 14x5.5 wood model and the cymbals are the original Zyn hats and 18" crash ride trash. It did also come with a nice 50s 20" Zildjian ride with rivets. The kit is in great shape and I feel obliged to keep it together, mojo included. So it'll get a clean and polish, new heads (pre int) and maybe a bit of work on the tom mount to make it playable. The original BD reso will stay. I have the bottom 12" hoop and tension rods also.

The owner has promised to send photos of the band in action so I'll share them here.

Look, under normal circumstances I would but this is the way it's always been and it's documented. It just seems right to leave it that way. If a matching FT comes along at the right price then yes, maybe. That's not out of the realms of possibility actually as this is the 3rd kit in this finish and era that has come up for sale locally in the last few weeks. Must have been a popular finish. The photos here are of the other two.

Hi,

That's a nice Kit that comes along with it's own story. So it's kind of 'Original' and I would not rewrap that Floortom. Looks kinda cool the way it is!

Enjoy those Premiers like I enjoy mine!

Great story and a beautiful kit with it's own unique personal touch due to the WMP floor tom!

Is the fixation of the two bongos really done through the inside of the major bongo, onto the bass drum?

The bass drum pedal is a STAR made one - all other parts seem to be genuine.

Hi Ralf, yes the mount is inside the bongo drum. I'll take a picture to show you when I'm cleaning it.

Yes, the BD pedal is Star as you say. I guess the original broke. As it happens I have the correct pedal that a friend has been using but, by sheer coincidence, he brought it back to me last night.

Thanks Wayne and Lars, I'll be keeping it the way it is just cleaning it up. I started on the snare yesterday and the Novus treatment did wonders. Virtually no fade and a beautiful deep lustre.

I finished cleaning up the HiFi snare and apart from some pitting on the top hoop the drum is in fantastic shape which, for a (probably) late 50s drum that has done a bit of work in its time, is pretty impressive. It even came with a spare NOS set of Premier snare wires but the ones on the drum are still good to go.
