[Attachment: 61410]Here's the 12 inch shell back from the cabinet maker- 3 coats poly with sanding in between. There were some fairly deep dents from serious gigging so my cabinet guy was leery of sanding too hard, so despite some minor imperfections in the shell, I think we're looking pretty good!Next step is the purchase of rims and a resonant head, when money allows.When completed, the 12 inch tom will go for sale here on the forum. Getting sprayed next is the 13 inch tom that I'm keeping for the rehab project. Picture also shows bare sanded shell for comparison.Talk to me, guys. This is one tough first time project for a novice like me. Thanks. d

On to the bass drums. Each 24 incher has been broken down to the bare shells. I've decided which shell and hoops to keep for the rehab project along with the best of the hardware from each. HOW DO I REPAIR THIS?

You are doing a great job.. don't envy you with the corroded bits.

I'd be thinking about carefully slicing the warped veneer out of the shell and attempting to straighten it out before reglueing it back and clamping it.

I would saturate it in water ( you do not want to crack it further ) then attempt to clamp it straight. Dry it with some heat,,, maybe a steam iron applied to the underside of the of the warped piece would help... ?? I'm no expert at this but have done a few furniture repairs along these lines..

Thanks for the updates!

That be some serious rust. The chrome lugs themselves should clean up well.

I was going to do a compare/contrast on CLR/Vinegar/Dawn but your hardware may be better for the test.

Ton of work but will be one outstanding kit when finished.

Rattle off a few serial numbers to confirm the build period.. as far as I know Bd's over 22" were fitted with the two pair of spurs.. Unusual that you have a 24" with only one pair.. Yes it seems like an add on.. do both bd's have the Set O Matic Tom mount? Cheers

No, only the BD with one set of spurs has the tom mount. That's the one I'm keeping for the reahb. The other, which will be up fo sale on VDF soon, strangely has no badge, 2 sets of spurs and someone drilled extra holes. See pics posted below. Thanks for your time. d

Thanks for the word...gonna sound really cowardly here, but what would be the impact if I chose to do nothing and simply put the BD back together after it's sprayed? I'm really a novice with fine wood working....

That said, once I "slice" out the warped veneer, do I replace it with any type of filler or are you suggesting gluing and clamping the remaining loose veneer?

For you guys who have been hand-walking and watching me all along, you are aware I'm funding the rehab with the parts of this huge set I don't care to keep. Can I have input on your thoughts of how much I should ask for the BD shell and rims once I post to the VDF For Sale? I'd rather sell here than on the 'bay. It is a 24 inch BD.

Thank you-on this rehab chromes have been murder----but I am learning---MAJOR big time. For the BD hardware I'm trying a raw vinegar soak for the first time. Will let you know of my findings. Whink and CLR without a doubt, remove the rust, but turns the rust free surface somewhat flat gray/black. I'm too fussy for that. May have to buy newer replacement parts....the Slingy claws suffered the most....

Dawn wasn't "caustic" enough for the rust on this project...it's just the idea of discarding parts from a company that's not in business any more..ooooch.

Re the veneer... yes I am suggesting a "Cut & Paste" ... If the damaged veneer cannot be straightened I'd cut in a new strip in as close a grain as you can find..

But if this is the Bd that you are going to part out, Maybe just sell it as is.. I think someone here would probably be interested..

Thanks for the advice longjohn.This is indeed the shell I'm keeping. It has the badge and the correct tom holder holes...I will give the cut & paste a try. Question from a wood worker novice. Where to buy and what kind of veneer do I use for the "paste?" Have a good weekend too. d.

Hopefully someone with knowledge a little more Local than I, will chime in re the Veneer supply..

I'd still try and straighten out & re use the piece that you cut out first..

Hi Longjohn. While the bass drum restoration is ongoing, I'm also working over the BR TDR 14 inch COB snare. Picture attached is the bought as is "before" photo. Can you advise what type of batter head would have been installed in the factory and can you advise if the snares are authentic? There are no identifying marks on them. I have hoops on order from Blair and once I get them, I can put this cool snare back together and finally hear how it was meant to sound. Also, replacement collar tension screws are needed--what is the correct type or measurement of the screws? DO you have any?

The COB shell is looking quite good, but I'm seeing other guys on the forum getting seemingly better results. From purchase I started with Windex to remove the grime, did once over with Never Dull and am presently up to 2 coats of Turtle Wax chrome wheel polish. Any advice? dean Help2Help2
